For me, this is a question where I can only utter, "Forget the scale!" These scales are generally unreliable and do not tell the whole story. Fluctuations in weight are completely normal and do not mean we've gained fat!
My suggestion is to either weigh less often and at the same time of day (a lot of us do weekly Monday morning weigh-ins for example) or to average the numbers so you get a more accurate reading accounting for fluctuations. For instance if you weigh twice a day, you divide that week's numbers by 14 and you'll get a more accurate representation of the downward trend.
For your sanity, it's pretty close to impossible to gain 2.5 pounds of fat overnight (that would mean consuming 7000 calories more than you burned) so it's probably water retention... either in fat cells or muscle tissue.
So, in short, forget the scale, take some measurements, and try to relax into this WOE.
Cheers!
