Default Anyone out there who BEAT Diabetes or lowered Meds

I have had a hell of last couple of years and have really ignored my health.
I have recently been told that I am at high risk for a heart attack. Being a diabetic, on Metformin, Januvia, now they have added crestor and Herba...something for protecting my kidneys. I am spilling sugar into my kidneys and my liver numbers are high. I realized I NEED to do something about it! I need to hear from all of you out there who have BEAT ( controlled/cured) diabetes, so that you are off the meds...or you have lowered your meds. I really need motivation!

Beat it? Cured? Once the damage is there, it can't be reversed. The good news is that you can live with it. Head over to bloodsugar101.com for some sage advice on the topic.

In the meantime, I pulled a 6.8% on my A1c back in November of '07, and a 6.9% on a 2h OGTT when my doctor labelled me IGT. I followed DANDR and today my A1c is 4.8% with no meds (I was only on a statin for a time.)

Pick a lo-carb plan you feel most comfortable with, and follow it. That's what I did and I couldn't be happier.

There are many ways to stop diabetes in its tracks, but to beat it as in it never coming back, or a permanent cure, not likely....

I don't need to say much in this thread other than I've written how I went from uncontrollable with meds, to controlled without meds in my journal and if you're interested in how I did it, you can read about it there.....

There are many approaches to get success, but first priority is get Blood Sugars under control, and second priority is start doing the things that improve all aspects of your health.

Knowing how you got to where you are and understanding all of the ins and outs of how our bodies work, etc... is not as important as just starting to eat right, exercise, stay active, rest, sleep, take supplements and stay attentive always....

Yes, diabetes can be controlled with proper diet and exercise and little or no meds.

I went from using insulin to just using Metformin ER now.

I have dropped 45 pounds and still need to do more.

However, I keep my Blood sugars under control generally between 90-140, which is the appropriate range for good eating. Good eating is keeping your carb intake down to levels that you can tolerate without raising your BG above 140 and also seeing it back below 120 after 2 hours.

This means carb intake in the range from 0-100 grams for most people.

I do my best to keep it between 30-60 grams.

With the weight lose I can tolerate more carbs, but my eating habit has moved more to veggies, salads and proteing and I stay away as much as possible from breads, rice, potatoes, etc.

Yes, I occasionally like to enjoy and yes sometimes the BG goes over 140. Every time that happens a little damage may be happening. So I don't do that too often.

I exercise by walking as frequently as possible. I get a decent amount of sleep.

Yes it can be controlled.

All my A1C's have been in the mid 5's like 5.2, 5.4, 5.6 , etc.

You can do better and I know I can do better too.

Best wishes,

Ralph

Actually, nondiabetics will sometimes have high BG well above
140 about an hour after a meal but it doesn't stay high very
long since their bodies make and use insulin efficiently.
I envy them

Before starting my new lifestyle I was pre-diabetic having blood sugar readings of anywhere from 9-12 and high blood pressure. My doctor wanted to start treating me with medication and I begged him to let me try it for a month on my own.
Well 2 months later WOW my readings are now in the normal range of 5-5.5 and my blood pressure is normal.
My doctor was so impressed and told me to keep on doing what Im doing cause it's working.
I am looking forward to getting some blood work done to check my cholesteral levels, which have always been good. Im eating alot more fat then before so kinda curious to see if it has raised up any.
Thank god for Atkins cause it really is saving my life.
