Default Breakfast Stew

I threw together a stew with shoulder pork roast, canned tomatoes, spices. Then I ate it for breakfast for quite awhile. I think this was one of my favorite breakfasts I can think of! I just started a new one.

I think so. Some places they call it a "picnic" roast. It's basically a part of pork with a lot of connective tissue and fat, really needs low/slow cooking.

I improvised the spices. But I dumped in a big can of diced tomatos. Used some dehydrated onion, squished in some fresh garlic from my garlic press. I put in a couple Tbl of chili powder and 1 Tbp of Penzey's Turkish spices. I put the crock pot on low for about 6 hours. At the end I took the lid off and turned it up to high for a couple hours to get rid of excess liquid.

If you don't have the Turkish spices I think some cumin would be good.

I've been daydreaming of the stew I'm going to make tomorrow.

It'll have pork shoulder, lemon and garlic. Maybe some fresh herbs too, marjoram and rosemary are in my garden.

That sounds really good!! I'm new to eating this way and am having a hard time with breakfasts. Stew seems like it would be perfect for breakfast - just heat up and eat.

How do you prepare the shoulder/butt? Do you just cube it? Or do you cook it and pull it first? (I'm also new to preparing meat...)

Thanks!

I just cut it into big chunks and throw it into the crockpot. Let it cook on low for about 6-8 hours. If it's too wet, I take the top off and put it on high for awhile and let some water evaporate.

Today I made stew with pork shoulder, tomatoes, celery root (kind of reminds me of potato), garlic, fresh marjoram, onion. Pretty good!
