Default Atkins and other low carb products?

I want to try SBD, and I've been seeing lots of aktins and other low carb products, but can they be used on SBD?

Most atkins products are very processed and SB is about eating whole foods.
If you're talking about bake mixes after you get into phase 2 you can start using stuff like whole wheat flour and oat bran.
As far as bread goes, after you get into phase two you can eat whole grain bread.
Just make sure it's the grainy type and has at least 3 grams of fiber per slice.
Whole grain pitas are a good choice too.
Atkins bars aren't very good either because they're notorious for stalling weight loss, like other atkins products.
SB isn't necessarily low carb although you do eat a lot less carbs than you normally would.
It's mainly about choosing the right carbs.
The low carb specialty foods really aren't very good for you.

Good luck on SB!

Hi! When I first started low carbing I spent tons of money buying all the Atkins stuff.....most of which I hated and threw out. Hubby likes the morning start apple crisp bars and packs one in his lunch each day for break. He is on maintenance now. I like some of the muffin mixes ( I learned to "tweak" them into tasting much better than the recipe on the bag!) but I only have them maybe once a week. I bake the whole batch and freeze them, zap as needed. Neither are good for Induction, or if you want to be strict on the south beach diet not at all. I feel whatever keeps me on track is good. I allow myself a LC muffin once a week rather than a cream filled doughnut! Hubby also likes the pancake mix, (had to tweak that a bit too!) but I don't. I have 2 boxes of Atkins bake mix in the cupboard waiting on a edible recipe, I just discovered bowl muffins and am using it for those now. It's all personal preference and what is right for you. Good Luck! K

Here is what South Beach has to say about low carb products and franken foods in general:

Quote:
Avoiding Expensive Diet Gimmicks

(Published 2/2/05) Trying to save money while dieting? The surest way to spend big bucks is to allow yourself to be taken in by expensive gimmicks. With an abundance of fad diets and products on the market, confusion is enemy number one for your wallet. Here are a few to watch out for:

1. Deceptive labeling. The term “low-carb” is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), yet manufacturers have found sneaky ways to use it on food packaging. Terms like “carb smart,” “carb friendly,” and “carb aware” are all unregulated, and are virtually meaningless for dieters. Until the FDA sets guidelines for the use of these terms, consumers should be wary of what they promise. Remember, The South Beach Diet™ is not a low-carb plan. The focus is on selecting the right carbs — ones that are whole grain and nutrient-rich.

2. Tricky addition and subtraction. “Net carbs” is another confusing term. As with other carb-related labels, there are no rules for how net carbs are calculated. Don’t shell out the cash for a product based on its net-carb total — you may be getting more than you bargained for.

3. “Magic” pills. No pill on the market can guarantee long-term weight loss. In fact, most diet pills offer nothing more than empty promises at a huge price. The Federal Trade Commission recently launched a campaign to root out companies marketing products with bogus weight-loss claims. Their “Big Fat Lie” program shows that the best way to lose weight is through healthy diet and exercise, and not through magic pills.

Stick with whole fresh foods as much as possible. Shop the perimeter of your grocery store and try to stay out of the aisles. Avoid low carb atkins foods.

The only low carb product that I allow myself to eat is Dreamfields pasta...I have it once every 2 weeks

Thanks for posting that article judy.
I got it in an email a while back and I was thinking about it when I seen this thread.
I was just too lazy to go through my inbox and find it.

I'd avoid the Atkins products like the plague. Just my $0.02.

Why would atkins products stall weight loss?
I know you said they are somewhat refined but my thought is a carb is a carb is a carb...
I'm just wondering how your body would distinguish the difference. I'm not saying you or anyone else here is wrong, it just doesn't make sense to me.
I want an atkins muffin darn it!!

A lot of Atkins products have sugar alcohols and alot of people can't lose weight when they lose weight.
They also give you really bad gas and the runs.
Also, processed foods aren't good for weight loss either.
Just a few carbs from processed foods seems to stall most people.
You can try them and see if they effect you, but they're really not part of SBD.

But if it's muffins you want, you can make them out of oat bran flour after you're in phase two.
It would be much better for you too.

What about Atkins recipes? I did find one for french toast that was made with pork rinds that was really good!
Guess I'm just trying to find the lesser of the two evils for when I am on the run and need to grab a bar or something on the go.

You can use atkin's recipes as long as they use whole, natural ingredients.
Pork rinds are ok, just don't go overboard.
They have a lot of salt.

Thanks Judy!

As I've been reading some of the posts here over the last several weeks; it appears that some folks either haven't read the SB book or aren't really doing true SB by choice. This seems to be most true when it comes to eating saturated fats. SB isn't Atkins with fruit...it's South Beach...we avoid foods that are high saturated fats.

From a South Beacher's point of view, eating pork rinds would something that should be avoided. Invest in the SB Good Fats Good Carbs Guide. It's inexpensive and a must have if you want to live a SB lifestyle. A quick glance at the guide will let you know that pork rinds are to be avoided on SB.

Sure, I sometimes push the envelope and have butter or some other fat that's not SB. I can tell you that I don't do it very often and did it rarely when I was losing my weight.

SB is about eating whole, unprocessed foods, that are lower on the glysemic index.

SBD really boils down to 4 simple things:
1. Don't eat bad carbs - eat good carbs.
2. Don't eat bad fats - eat good fats.
3. Don't overeat and maintain portion control.
4. Get some exercise - any is better than none.

Sorry if I'm stepping on anyones toes...it just seems like some posts here have been getting away from what SB is all about. I don't understand why folks would aspire to live a SB lifestyle and then try to find ways to eat foods that aren't part of the lifestyle.

South Beach is what it is.....and it isn't about eating high saturated fats.

Bill

That's why I said not to go overboard.
The only reason it says to avoid them is because of the saturated fat.
They have no carbs so, in moderation, they won't hurt your weight loss.
