Studies on whether L-Carnitine assists fat oxidation have had mixed results. One study that did show positive results was carried out by employees of a manufacturer of carnitine.
Studies show that formerly obese people have reduced fat oxidation, up to 50% less fat burning was observed during exercise in one study. L-carnitine may improve this, helping them not to regain weight. However, it may have no effect at all because although L-Carnitine supplementation increases blood levels it does not appear to increase levels in muscle tissue. On the other hand one study showed that the increased blood level was effective in reducing muscle sorenenss after exercise.
Finally-anyone on a low carb diet probably does not need to supplement as carnitine is derived from red meat, dairy, poultry and fish. and we can only store a small amount of carnitine.
