Default Gall Bladder and Atkins

Hi all!! I have recently been diagnosed with gallbladder problems and it has been decided that the gallbladder needs to be removed. The problem is that low-carbing Atkins style means full fat, and I will be unable to tolerate fatty foods. The bile will drain directly into my intestines now, and I will have difficulty digesting fatty foods. Has anyone else dealt with this problem? I really would like to have some answers!! Perhaps another low-carb plan without the dependence on high fat? Please help me. . thanks!!

hi there Goddess,

This concern has come up before. I think you might be re-assured to know that you will be able to follow the Atkins program with only a small adjustment in your fat intake .. mostly the TYPES of fat, as opposed to the amounts Check out this thread .. WARNING Gall Stones for more advice and ideas.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Hi Goddess!

Not everyone has problems with fat after having their gallbladders removed. I don't. Interestingly enough, the only advice my surgeon gave me after the surgery was "Eat whatever you like. If it bothers you, then don't eat it.". He did caution me that foods high in fat might give me some trouble, but they never did. They still don't to this day. There are very few foods that I can't seem to tolerate and most of them seem to be high carb, popcorn being one of them (even the air-popped kind). Everyone reacts differently so you'll have to experiment a bit after surgery to find out what you can and can't tolerate. Go easy and like my doc said, if it bothers you don't eat it. Many people low carb successfully following a gallbladder removal. I'm sure you'll do just fine even if it requires a bit of tweaking here and there.
