Default cheap ground almonds anywhere?

hi there,

Most of the LC recipes I've been trying (vegetarian) include ground almonds which are so expensive in the UK and tend to come in small packs. Is there a good bulk supplier out there without huge delivery charges?

Eventually I would like to buy a grinder to make my own, and to grind linseed's too, so please let me know if you can recommend a reasonably priced one that does a good job. I am so sick of flimsy appliances that break quickly!

Thanks

Wing Yip (which is open to the public) sells ground almonds in 1kg bags for about £4.30, however this is for the Indian sweet-making market and is stronger tasting than usual.

Sainsburys are doing a promotion on their 200g bags of ground almonds, making them pretty affordable at 79p each.

Other than that CostCo sells bags of whole almonds, I think 1.25kg for about £6.50-£7, which I grind in a blender. This is the usual way I get my almond meal. They also do bulk bags of pecans for around the same price.

Tesco's online store shows they do big 1kg bags of almonds but I've never seen them in store - I guess it's the biggest places only.

Other than that, try your local Asian store or market - almonds are used a lot in Indian-Asian cooking, for example.

As to grinding them, almonds are easily done in a basic £20 liquidiser/blender. I prefer them with a glass jug though, as I beleive that the plastic ones might get scored. Even a hand blender will do, though that does require technique and a lot of patience.

Linseeds need to be done in a coffee grinder and I haven't got one yet. (And if you know of anywhere doing linseed at a reasonable price please share, as the mind boggles at how companies can charge so much for what is usually regarded as animal feed)

I hear that a magic bullet blender will grind coffee but they look very complated (21 pieces) and they're really not cheap.

For some reason I can't fathom, Flaked Almonds are a lot cheaper than any other form including whole. So I buy them flaked and grind them into flour in my coffee grinder. I also substitute ground sunflower seeds sometimes, which are MUCH MUCH cheaper than almonds, but have practically the same nutritional profile. I grind these myself; I have never seen sunflower seed flour for sale in the UK.

I just paid over 4 euro (3 pound sterling approx) for a 200g bag in Tesco Ireland, think I will be crossing the border to Newry in future.

Wow, thats some difference in price

Thanks all for the great tips, I think I'll invest in a blender/grinder and make my own, my hand blender recently broke so I need something to replace it. I'd never thought about using sunflower seeds and I'm going to try that now too. If I come across any nut/ seed bargains in the stores around I'll post a note.

If you have a Makro or other catering supplier nearby you should be able to buy 1kg bags of whole, flaked and ground almonds for a better price than the supermarkets.
