Default Great - not! Hidden carbs in meds...

I was browsing the Hot Links in the Newbies question, hoping to find a thread about the right fat/protein proportion on this WOE, then I found this really informative thread about the carb content of medications (find it here). After calculating for my meds I found a whopping extra 3 g.
daily !

So I have to factor this in on Fitday. Any idea what I could call this custom food?!

If you hadn't looked, would you have worried?

I don't. Refuse to, as a matter of fact. Don't care. I eat what I eat, and I'm losing, and that's all that matters. For me, total calories are WAY more of an issue than a carb or two, esp. in the non-nutritive form of a medication that makes life possible.

As long as I am committed to LC principles, and exercise regularly, 3-5 carbs either way aren't going to make any difference at all.

Actually, I recalculated because I thought it was too high for a few pills. It turns it really is .03 g which fitday does not even count so why should I?

Your philosophy is very good. My meds have changed my life, enabling to enjoy my family, to have goals and a job as opposed to a long, dreary and grey line which used to be my life. I truly am happy and you ARE right. What are a few carbs here and there if our quality of life is that much better.

Thanks for the reminder.

I'm an asthmatic and use Serevent discus, Flovent inhaler, Albuterol nebulizer solution and Albuterol emergency inhaler. I didn't see any of these (in the inhalation form) on your list. Do you know where I might find out about these medications. Since my life literally depends on them it's not a question of giving them up but working them into my new WOL. I'm going to lose this weight and I'm going to stay with Atkins. I just need to know how to figure these meds into my daily carb count.

These are the medications I found on the link I mentioned that contain some carbs.:

ASTHMA/RESPIRATORY AGENTS
ALBUTEROL (PROVENTIL): SCHERING
2 mg tab, 4 mg tab: cornstarch, lactose (unknown amt - proprietary info)
4 mg Repetab: cornstarch, lactose, sugar (unknown amt-proprietary info)
Syrup (2 mg/5 ml): no carbohydrate (contains saccharin)

THEOPHYLLINE
THEO-DUR: KEY
100mg capsules: confectioner's sugar, cornstarch, lactose (unknown)
300mg capsules: lactose (unknown amount - proprietary info)

SLO-BID: RHONE-POULENC RORER
100mg capsules: 30mg sucrose, 9mg cornstarch, gelatin capsule
300mg capsules: 89mg sucrose, 26mg cornstarch, gelatin capsule

Remember, these are miligrams, not grams or centigrams, like I was counting them!!!

You may also check this link for the complete list.

The inhalers won't be a carb concern, since they don't require fillers. Their base is usually saline (salt) and/or alcohol, and only in trace amounts.

The only weight concern to be aware of is that Flovent (fluticasone) is a steroid, and there is a small risk that it can cause weight gain due to fluid and salt retention. Your best bet will be to limit your salt and salty processed foods, eat lots of veggies (for the fiber and potassium which will help to balance the sodium salt) and drink plenty of plain water. But it won't be a concern as far as carbs go.

Thanks, Doreen. I do drink 3 to 4 liters of water a day (I use 1/2 liter bottles so I can keep track of it easily). I also watch my salt intake and use an all natural bacon without nitrates or nitrites in it. I really appreciate your input. I almost never add salt to anything I cook and I cook from fresh only - no frozen or canned. What little salt I do use is seasalt. I loath lettuce so all of my salads are made with spinach = great for potassium.

Actually, a lot of the oral medications are now being replaced by inhaled ones. I stopped taking theodur several years ago as it was replaced by an inhaled medication that is even better at controlling asthma. I use the flovent and the serevent combination instead of the new Advair discus simply because my insurance pays for them but won't pay for Advair. Go figure!
