You're so right. My Gold's has only ONE squat rack, but THREE Smith Machines.

Interestingly, I've just joined a new gym here in the UK, and they are currently expanding their free weights section, which is already very well equipped

It was actually the reason I signed up. I went along yesterday just to have a look, and ended up signing on the spot!

I had been thinking about buying my own squat rack, but now I won't have to.

Then you definitely lucked out. Here, all the gyms seem to be "improving and expanding" by removing the bigger free weights and racks, and replacing them with machines.

Quite apart from anything else, machines break down. I've never seen a gym that hasn't at some time had an "out of order" notice on a machine. But I've yet to see an out of order squat rack.

The great thing about my power rack/cable/free weight home gym is the only time it is "out of order", is when I'm not using it.

Check your clubs that have been around a while...YEARS.
Newer clubs will not for liability reasons. There is not a guarantee that the user will use a spotter, ( ie on the squat racks or using heavier free weights).
