Great site, Angela! It's answered at least one of my questions posted in a previous thread, and made room for interpretation for a couple of others.

Kefir tastes like liquidy yogurt. Kind of like a drink you might be served at an Indian restaurant... if that helps.

I love kefir. Every morning for breakfast I have a half cup of kefir, a scoop of Keto shake mix, and a few sliced strawberries. It is the best breakfast! Using kefir instead of water makes it thick like a mousse so I eat it with a spoon.

So after reading this I am assuming only plain yogurt is allowed.

So you mix it with fruit? What fruit can you eat that is low-carb?

Okay, I don't have a clue about this yogurt thing. Here's what I bought tonight.....is it close to what's allowed?

151 cal
5.1 g protein
8.8 g fat
12 g carbs
89 mg sodium
298 mg potassium

Ingredients: skim jersey milk, cream, active bacterial cultures (Acidophilus and Bifidus).

Also, it says 5% M.F., all natural, on the label.

Thanks for anybody's input.

Suzan

Technically, I don't know. But the full fat yogurt I've seen in the store range from 3.5% to 10%. Not sure why they range so much. I prefer the 10% I found - it's the consistency of sour cream.

OK, here's your answer from the Cook's Thesaurus: http://www.foodsubs.com/Cultmilk.html

yogurt = yoghurt Notes: This is milk that's cultured with bacteria to make it thick and tangy. Ready-made yogurts are made from whole milk (with up to 4% butterfat), lowfat milk (with up to 2% butterfat), and skim milk (with up to .5% butterfat).

Not sure what my 10% yogurt is!

Angela,
I was reading the site that you had on yogurt and they had mentioned the Blue Bunny. I noticed that they said to buy artificially flavored ones.
I bought some Blue Bunny strawberry yogurt tonite and was wondering what to actually figure on carbs. Its says 14 carbs per cup. But I noticed on the ingredients that it has some real fruit. Im not sure to count them as 4 carbs per cup like the article said, because of the fact that its not artificially flavored. What would you think the carb count might be? Maybe I should figure it at like 6-7 carbs/cup.

Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are the lowest. You may want to mix in a packet or two of Splenda.... I couldn't eat it otherwise, you may be ok without it.

And you don't HAVE to mix it with fruit. Some people just use a little lemon and/or vanilla, or banana extract...something like that.

Thanks everyone for the info.

Wanda - the figures you listed are the B.F. counts. My yogurt has the M.F. (milk fat) percentage. Any idea about that?

Oh no! Wanda I love Liberty yogurt. I eat the same as you. It is heaven. Do you think than because it is so low in bacteria that it may be higher in carbs? Maybe the study that determined the sugar content of yogurt used a yogurt higher in bacteria than liberty's?..........B

If possible, try to find a brand with more than two active cultures. Stonyfield Farms has six, for example. I've heard that this gives the lowest carb count.

Do you eat the Liberty Mediterranee or just the regular Liberty? I wondered the same thing as you, but it still has live cultures, so I would think that it wouldn't affect the carb count. But obviously I'm not 100% sure. It just might not give the digestive or probiotic benefits like some of the others. I already take a probiotic so that doesn't really affect me. I'm not really willing to give up my 10% fat yogurt for the other 3.5% fat yogurts. They are too watery in comparison. And besides, my servings are only about 100g, so in the worst case scenario, I'd only be getting 4 grams of carbs.

Since we are dealing with some leaps in faith about carb count, if you are worried about it, maybe you should switch to another brand. I noticed that Organic Meadows just came out with a full fat yogurt (finally), if your store carries it. Stoneyfield, like Kaillean says, is probably the best brand, although I can only find it in low fat and soy.
