Default atkins study

When I read the report, I was actually surprised that the test subjects only lost about 20 lbs in six months - many folks here report faster loss. However, the article further explains that not all the subjects stuck to the diet consistently. It also depends on how much needs to be lost in the first place - really big people will lose faster at first.

I don't do atkins - I do my own version of protein power, so I limit myself to 30 carbs. I haven't been on it for six months yet - only 4 weeks - but i've lost about 7.5% of my body weight during those 4 short weeks. :-)

(FYI I got into low carbing both for weightloss and treatment of PCOS.)

Regarding CAD, I was under the impression they changed their program and removed the reward meal. I can see why now. It probably works only for the less severily addicted.

Years ago I picked up their book and did their addiction test and came off negative. They went at length saying that their program only helps the sugar addicts and not the rest. So I figured it woudn't help me. So I tossed the book aside and didn't give it another thought.

It's too bad in a way. It might have turned me on to the low-carb WOE earlier and saved me years of feeling fat and not looking my best (and the lack of confidence that goes with it).

I read Judy Schwarzbein introduction to the Susanne Sommers book and found it pretty interesting. If ever I find it I'll give it some serious consideration.

Hi,

I want to respond to the post by Angeline...

I make it a point not to criticise anyone elses food program even if i stongly disagree with it!

Also, IF they "went at length saying that their program only helps the sugar addicts and not the rest" As far as i know is NOT written anywhere in the book. - Its a program for people who respond to carboyhdrates (refined sugar included) in a specific way - Mainly insulin resistant

AND, If you read MY statistics i was roughly 40 pounds overweight and thanks to CAD I am now only about 10. Having spent most of my 20s suffering depression and loads of other problems including chronic anxiety from being so overweight and in a constant battle, I think id call myself fairly severly afflicted.

If you dont like CAD, thats fine but theres no need to spread mis-information about it! If you really want to be helpful why dont you promote the positive effects your own program has had in your life.

Nothing I wrote in my post was intended as a criticism of CAD.

It's true that in the book they do say that in their years of prescribing their diet they found that it works for some people and not some others. (I can find the page number if you want) Then they provide the reader with a test to determine if they are a carbohydrate addict or not. The message was clear to me. If you are a carbohydrate addict, this program will help you, if you are not, then it won't. So I took the test and it was negative. I wasn't a carbohydrate addict. So I logically infered the method wouldn't work for me. That's not mis-information. And why provide a test at all if it's irrelevant and their method will help everyone regardless of insulin resistance ?

It was an old edition, and maybe things have changed since then. But that was the message then.

And I can't remember exactly where, but it was a post by a senior here and she was saying that they had changed their method (in a later edition I assume) and didn't have the reward meal anymore. And reading this very thread a few people commented that the reward meal didn't work for them because it induced too many cravings. So it made me understand why they changed their method. I simply commented on that. Again it wasn't a criticism.

Hi,

Im sorry if i misunderstood you...

I actually didnt know there was newer editions of the book too. Maybe some people do find it too hard, i just feel exteremly lucky that this works for me and my years of torture are (for now) over.

I just couldnt imagine a life with NO carbs...

I see you are on "Montignac", i have not heard of that one.

Whats it involve ?

Montignac isn't very well known in the USA, but it's quite popular in Europe and here in Quebec.

Basically it's a low-carb approach with an emphasis on healthy eating. Carbs are allowed but only the non refined healthy kind with a low glycemic index. People are encouraged to eat healthy fat and discouraged from eating saturated and trans fat. Non-starchy vegetables are a must.

One characteristic that differentiate his program from others is that he advocates making any particular meal either a protein/fat meal OR a carb/no-fat, low-fat meal. In other words, not to mix fat with carbs. So if you choose to have a carb meal it should be as low fat as you can make it with healthy carbs with a low-glycemic index If you opt instead for a pro/fat meal, insure that there are no carbs present, except for non-starchy vegetables of course. He allows cheese, wine (with moderation), and chocolate (the bitter kind).

All in all a very pleasant program to follow. Very french, so very gourmet. Also quite healthy if you adhere to it seriously. I lost 10 lbs as of today on it (in about a month)

...or I didn't understand it. I have been on a modified Atkins since December 3, of last year I've lost a total of 34.9% of my total body weight. 401 pounds to 261 pounds. The first 85 days I lost a total of one pound a day! I'm certainly not suffering and I think I'm doing pretty well and more important is my health has returned. I was a insuln dependant diabetic, I'm now totally controlled with diet and my Blood Glucose levels is averaging 100, thats pretty normal. Just thought you like to see and I'll post some photos when I can figure it out again. Be well. Jim

I'll try posting the photo's below.
