Walk in silence at least once a week to reconnect mind and body

Listening to music or a podcast when walking is a great way to multitask and to distract from how hard you are working. Costas Karageorghis, a professor in sport and exercise psychology and head of Brunel University London’s sound and vision innovations group, says that many of our body rhythms, including heart rate and brainwaves, lock into music in a positive way so that we sync our stride patterns with it when walking. “Choose upbeat music with a consistent and steady beat and an obvious metre,” he says. “Your mind can extract the rhythmical content of the music so that you can then sync your stride rate with it on a power walk.”

It’s not for everyone (myself included), however, and even Karageorghis recommends doing at least one walk a week in silence. Music is so powerful, he says, that it has the potential to override stress reduction and an important mind-body connection. “As a rule of thumb, use music for two sessions out of three and on other walks learn to listen to your body and to tune into your surroundings instead,” he says.

I never listen to music or podcasts when I'm walking outdoors. I prefer the ambient sounds around me, whether it's birds, wind and water ... or the rhythms of traffic or a plane overhead (I live near a small municipal airport). These days, it's the crunch of my own steps on packed snow.

For indoor walking, I've recently rediscovered TallSky Walker on youtube. James Beer is a freelance photographer/videographer who wears a head-cam while hiking - and sometimes biking - various scenic trails in the northwest US and Canada. A few are set to music, most are all natural sounds. They're intended for use with a treadmill or stationary bike, but they're perfect for indoor walking too. (really, once you've walked with Leslie a few times you know all the moves without needing a voice-over telling you when to switch). They're best viewed on a large screen .. perfect if you can stream youtube on your TV.

My favourite is an 18-minute hike along the shore of Lake Moraine in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. I've actually hiked that trail in person, years ago . There are two versions .. no music/actual sound ... and another with instrumental music. I enjoy both.

Beer's motto is "Aim high .. it's a tall sky"

I also walk in silence. I want to be aware of what’s going on around me. If nothing else it’s safer that way. Many of the streets I walk on have no sidewalks and I want to be able to hear any cars approaching plus there is a social aspect to walking. I frequently run into people i know, most of them people I have met while walking, so I like to be able to meet and greet them, pass a few words or a simple hello.

Also as i read this article I thought why make something as simple as walking complicated. I don’t want to nasal breath, or wear a weighted vest and my town is very hilly so I don’t have to seek out hills to climb. I can’t avoid them. I do wish sometimes that I could seek out long stretches without any hills at all. I think the simple act of walking is beneficial enough, at a brisk pace rather than a stroll.
