I know all the vegan soups I've ever tried are LOADED with sugar. They also are probably low on protein. I wondered why: if craving sugar is a sign of low protein...

Diet factors that can cause cravings

Although your brain can be a challenge to your willpower, there can be foods in your diet that trigger your longing for sugary foods. One dietary culprit is low protein intake. Because protein and fats slow the release of sugar into your bloodstream, when you don’t consume enough of them your blood sugar can rise and fall at an abnormal rate. The result? Your body craves quick energy from sugar.

Bingo! I wonder if those who experience the "keto flu" are suffering from exactly this mechanism that not only have they eliminated sugars, but the small amount of carbs they do consume are slowed in release to the blood due to consuming more proteins and fats. Kind of a knock on effect that goes away in a short time by increasing electrolytes and fluids.

I only eat animal based foods occasionally... just a few animal based foods daily.

Unfortunately, that means I don't get to join the ranks of those who can appropriate "vegetarian" to describe my way of eating, because I sometimes go days without eating any plant based foods.

I eat both animal and plant based foods daily.

But I am a picky eater, so there are a lot of things I don't eat. But then I guess vegetarians are simply picky eaters too, they just pick different foods to eat than I do.

It's all OK with me.

I'm 73, on zero meds, with a heart/circulation system of a 50 year old (says a heart doc) and the only illness I get is a mild cold every 15 or so years.

I think I'll continue being a lacto-ovo-fisho-beefo-porko vegetarian

Bob
