Why wouldn't they test against the actual food experienced rather than someone looking at a picture? There's many reasons why the latter would be problematic. Was there some actual reasoning behind this?

Back in the day, when I had been convinced that fat was bad, I tried eating 'healthy' whole-wheat products. Whole-wheat pasta was also nasty tasting, no matter what I topped it with.

Perhaps not, but in my personal experience in slumming around both left & right media outlets, the lefty ones seem to present the vegan side more frequently & in a more friendly light, whereas the rightwing ones usually complain about leftys telling them what they can & can't eat. Their favorite target lately has been the First Lady's school lunch initiative.

BTW here's a comical example of a complaint from the right, reported by the left:

I'ma just going to pop my moderator bonnet on for a moment to remind you all not to stray into political territory. It's a forum nono, as mentioned in the Comments Box sticky here: Why politics, religion and other contentious debates are not permitted here.

Now, back to full throated criticism of that silly "study".

Yeah, this is a real cop-out. I recall a study in which researchers were comparing brain MRIs of people with binge eating disorder and bulimia to people without overeating issues, and the subjects were being monitored before and then *while* sipping on a chocolate milkshake. (The results are what you'd expect: the eating-disordered people's brains lit up the MRIs like a Christmas tree.)

The Tulane study left a lot to be desired, mainly a valid tool to measure fat loss. They used bio-electrical impedence, fer chrissakes — a method that's known to have an error range of ±15%! Plus, the initial study report didn't even explain what the content of the nutrition counseling was, so we don't know what they were supposed to eat. That, plus a lot of other yellow flags, justifies — at best — another study to correct the show-stopping flaws of this one.
