Default Anyone else currently pregnant?

I am currently 15 wks pregnant with my 3rd child. Until a few months ago I was doing lc, then for a number of reasons fell off. Then I got pg.

The last couple of months have been a bit of a disaster with me eating whatever I wanted with the perfect excuse. Especially over Xmas. Chocolate, cake, pizza, white bread etc etc. I have managed to gain 9kg and have been feeling dreadful - blood sugar all over the place, tired, achey, headaches etc. So I know I need to sort out my diet and get back on track. I am not particularly concerned about weight gain, but just need to stay healthy and feel good.

Now, with being pregnant I know I shouldn't go straight into induction, so my plan is basically to cut out all processed carbs and sugar. I will continue eating moderate amounts of wholegrains, veg (including potato) and fruits. I have been doing this for a couple of days now and am starting to feel a little better.

I was wondering if anyone else was in a similar situation and wanted to buddy up with me on this??

I am 37 weeks along, and have managed to stay VLC for the duration of my pregnancy. Before we conceived I'd been LC/VLC for 8 months. I truly believe that keeping my carbs down is what has allowed me to have a wonderfully healthy and easy pregnancy. For a little while in the first trimester I did lose a little bit of appetite, but I never had any morning sickness nor any problems with blood sugar or excessive weight gain.

I'm glad you are feeling better as you're going down on your carbs! I had some trouble starting out on the same page as my care providers since they felt that LC and being in ketosis were dangerous to my pregnancy and baby, so at first I added a few carbs back in for the sake of doing so. A mistake for me, it just made me feel lousy and I felt it silly to modify what was already a wonderful, optimal diet for my body and growing baby.

Absolutely right. You already know that the mucky bits you've been eating lately aren't too healthy for you in themselves, irrespective of the weight gain issue.

Certainly your little one won't be harmed by mum loving herself a bit more and getting his (or her) nutrition from eating the good stuff - because you're BOTH worth it!

Fingers crossed for you making it work.

Thank you both for your support! I have been fairly consistently lcing (in various degrees...) for around 5 years now, so I know that this is the best way for my body to eat. I just need to learn how to make it work under slightly different conditions!!

My biggest challenge at the moment is snacking. I am finding that I am very hungry and needing to snack mid-afternoon, but being at work am struggling to find anything appropriate to eat. I think I will have to a) reduce the carbs and increase the protein I eat for lunch to hopefully make me less hungry in the afternoon, and b) be organised and bring suitable snacks in with me so they are to hand when I need them!

Thanks again!

(PS - I looked in on your blog Freddy - very inspiring! I particularly enjoyed the Funkadelic reference!)

Hi! I'm 9 months pregnant (36 weeks) & have been eating carbs like there is no tomorrow, so probably wouldn't make the best buddy, but glad to see another pregnant person! I've just started minimizing carbs today. My urine glucose level has increased over the past month, and today was at 2g (huge!!!!); my OB told me to just start eating the ADA diet. I'm not going to do the ADA, but have decided to start general low carb my own way. My weight is enormous, and I'm 35 pounds heavier than w/ my first pregnant at 9 months. Finally waking up to the fact that I need to go low carb, though I'm reluctant to do induction right now (will start induction after the birth of my child).

We can do this!

Hi fatnewmum (don't think I like calling you that!) thanks for coming over! Do you know if you're having a boy or a girl?

I am also high risk for diabetes (both my mum and my sister have type II) so I really want to get my diet under control before I have to do that horrid glucose test in a few weeks (I think they do it at 28 weeks here).

Some good news to offer encouragement - I woke up this morning and looked in the mirror and was amazed to see that my huge bloated belly had visibly deflated, and the scale was down about 1lb since last week. I'm not trying to lose weight - and am certainly eating sufficient - so this is probably just water weight from cutting down the carbs - but it's all good!!

Good luck with cutting back your carbs and feel free to check back in here for accountability and support if you want!

Snacking is a bugger, isn't it? With me it's just this t-i-n-y slither of cheese which couldn't possibly do any harm could it (half a dozen times a day, two or three times during the night, with slither escalating to chunk without any conscious interference......).

Glad you liked the blog (it does me good if nothing else): feel free to drop back any time. Meanwhiles look after the pair of youse!

I had a lot of up and down bloat even with being VLC, I think some of it is just par for the course of pregnancy. That said, I was happier for the days when I didn't have the bloat, felt so much better!

A huge fear I had was my glucose test as well, I also have a lot of T2's in the family . I didn't "carb up" or anything like that beforehand (I've seen it suggested sometimes). I wasn't so much worried about having GD especially since I eat LC, but more worried about "flunking" the one hour challenge and then having to take the 3 hour test, yuk. One thing I have seen cause a higher reading from the test is when something carby was consumed in the few hours prior to the glucola challenge.

hola,
im 19 weeks prego, and today is the first day lc, because im pregnant i do not feel the need to go into induction anytime soon. i decided no bread/rice/pasta/crackers etc. no cakes either! i will get my carbs from veggies and fruit. drink my water and eat my fat and my proteins. because im pregnant i understand that i need more protein than the average woman, so i will be trying to get in as much as i can, i think the average is i want to say 65-80 grams of protein a day for the average pregnant woman! anyways glad to be here, whether you guys support my birth or not! im glad to find other people doing LC that are pregnant!
so my edd is june 5th 2011, my dad thinks i will go early, i think i will go late!

Hi hippynelli! You're in just about the same place I am then! I am due June 27th.

I am not missing the carby junk much - though I do really fancy something sweet at the moment. Might need to try out some baking tonight!

I agree on the protein - I have heard about the same number. I actually have a protein shake for breakfast most days at the moment which helps me keep that up.

I am SOOO hungry today, and of course I forgot to bring any snacks with me :-( Can't wait to go home and cook everything in the fridge!!

Keep posting - it is good to have some lc pregnant buddies!

How about nuts for snacking? Yum! All the best to you all -- this is such a good idea -- I actually lost weight while pregnant because I was eating so well (wasn't trying to lose, just eating well, wish it was as easy as that at other times!), had to go through lots of checks as a result, but doc agreed that all was well, and I had lovely big boy who is now 15! Take care!~

I am pregnant and want to at least watch my carbs this time - well, as well as my calories. I really don't need to gain too much weight this time!

Hi Ladies,

I'm not new to this forum but I haven't been around for quite awhile. I am currently 10 weeks pregnant with my first, due August 11th. I've already gained about 8 lbs but I think that is more due to holiday eating than being pregnant. I've been eating way too many carbs lately though and I need to get this under control. Diabetes runs in my family, as well as pre-eclampsia, so I really need to take care of myself. One thing I struggle with is finding a middle ground when it comes to carbs. It's fairly easy for me to eat Induction-level carbs, but once I start increasing it's hard not to go way overboard. Anyway it will be great to check in here and see how you all are doing!

Cheers!
