Weight lifting is easiest for most of us at a gym, I know it is for me even with a fair amount of equipment at home. A number of the group sessions at gyms are really good, I gained a LOT of muscle in the Rep Reeboks classes. Free weights, as they use, are better for your body than most of the machines, which can force your body to move in bad ways.
An alternative is bands, really just giant rubber bands. You can duplicate almost anything in a gym with them, 3 pair are just a hundred dollars or so. Adding several pounds of muscle also adds a lot of well being. And few of us weight people find it puts appetite out of control. My hunger is almost never related in an unhealthy way to my exercise.
