At 03.00 uur, so in the middle of the night, I drove to the centre of town to buy 'oliebollen' and 'appelbeignets'. For a picture of this national dish, see:

These kind of raisins and apple doughnuts are eaten on December 31st in huge quantities. I bought 82 of them for only 6 people.

I still haven't had one. I went to the park instead, a big black stola wrapped around my face and around my hair like a P.L.O.-terrorist and did my 5 miles of jogging.

Are there any American specialities for this day?

New Years Eve isn't a big thing for me. We ususally just have a quiet night with family, which is what we'll do this year. I'm not sure about the States, but here in Canada, I don't know of any special things that people consume. Just regular old stuff!

Some folks, especially in the south eat black eyed peas on New Year's Day. It is supposed to bring good luck and prosperity.
