Default Vitamin Question??

What is a Good Muli Vitamin to take I heard if you are pre menopause.
You should not take Iron. I dont know if this is true or not.
And if it is WHY.

I was taking womans 1 a day muli vitamins but I notice there was Iron.
Can any one tell me the reason why Iron is not good if you are pre menopause because I,m so not sure what kind of muli vitamin to take

So can any one Recommend a good one to take.
Thanks for any advice.

Debbie

All I can tell you for sure is what happened to me. When I was in my late 30's we lived in the country and there was a great deal of iron in our water. We needed a softener, but couldn't afford one at the time.

When I had a hair test done to have my health assessed by a nutritionist, my hair sample came up with an over abundance of iron. The nutritionist told me that too much iron can deplete the system of calcium.

That is the only reason I can think of that pre-men. women might need to NOT take iron, because of the threat of osteoprorsis if too much iron does indeed leech calcium from the system.

I've also read on this board that Dr. Atkins says we don't need iron because of eating an abundance of animal protein. Can't prove that either, but it sounds logical.

Flintstone chewables. The recommended intake of vitamins and minerals for adults is the same as for children. If you chew up the vitamin you don't have issues with it staying in a pellet and not dissolving. Children's vitamins also tend to be low iron and won't cause iron issues.

I take Centrum Silver as well. I just checked the label and if I read correctly, they DO NOT contain iron.

Iron, added in a vitamin supplement, is usually recommended for PRE-menopausal women, as anemia is not uncommon. I, personally, have had two friends hospitalized for anemia during perimenopausal heavy bleeding. In both cases, they were told to be sure to take a multi, containing iron, and to increase their red meat consumption.

As I have had no problems with that, and am now entering the (I HOPE) final stages of meno......I also use Centrum Silver.

Neither of my friends lived where iron in the water was an issue, however. I would guess that having your levels checked by a physician would be a good idea.

From what I recall, Atkins suggests that you take a multi without iron even if you're young (meaning still having your period) because the foods you eat on the diet provide plenty of iron, and you don't want too much. I take a multi without iron, but I eat plenty of red meat and cook in cast iron skillets on occasion - I think that's enough iron for me. BTW, I'm 30, so no menopause here.

Thanks for that I still have my peroid for only 2 days,
But its still there. I'm 48 years old.

I really do not eat a lot of red meat I eat more chicken & fish.
So now I'm confused. Do I take Iron or not????

Or should it just be my choice.

Thank you everyone for your input.

Debbie
