What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)?
PCOS is a health problem that can affect a woman’s menstrual cycle, fertility, hormones, insulin production, heart, blood vessels, and appearance. Women with PCOS have these characteristics:
• high levels of male hormones, also called androgens
• an irregular or no menstrual cycle
• may or may not have many small cysts in their ovaries. Cysts are fluid-filled sacs.
PCOS is the most common hormonal reproductive problem in women of childbearing age
There are tons of studies on vitamin D and hormones, sex characteristics, insulin resistance, and other symptoms of PCOS.

Default Afraid to Exercise?

Hi everyone...

I was wondering if anyone else could relate to what I'm going through.

I have a serious exercise phobia. Because of - you know how your heart rate speeds up when you have a panic attack, I always start panicking when my heart rate goes up doing exercise. I have a heart phobia.

Now...I KNOW my heart is perfectly fine and healthy. About 18 months ago I went through a huge battery of tests on my heart because I was so frozen by this fear. Everything came back fine, and even the cardiologists standing around watching me run on the treadmill during a thallium stress test were getting bored watching the EKG because nothing weird was happening. Thank God. One even asked me if I was a walker. So...I got over my fears for a while, but now they're back.

However, I know that execising would make me lose weight and feel better.

I ordered a DVD from amazon called Walk Away the Pounds and I should get it early next week. It's got two workouts. The first is a 15 minute - 1 mile, and then there's a 30 minute 2 mile. I am thinking that just ordering them was a big step. (Isn't that silly?)

Anyway, I was just curious if anyone else felt like this, ever.

Thanks for listening.

Good Morning!

I think ordering them was a big step as well - good for you! I've never had this particular problem, but it makes complete sense. Maybe you could just do the tape at a slower pace to begin with, so that you're doing 1/2 mile in the 15 minutes by walking slower than the tape recommends. The other thing I was thinking might work is if you just do a lot of toning exercises. You wouldn't be getting the cardio, but you'd be moving those muscles.

Good for you! You're facing your fear by taking the first step BTW, have you ever tried Pilates? Those really work your muscles but don't speed up your heartrate and it's a slow, gentle exercise that isn't stressful at all - very relaxing actually - but man, does it ever work your muscles (slow working of mucles). When I've finished the tape I feel like I didn't work out at all and feel relaxed and calm but the next morning??? OWWWWW

I haven't had that particular fear (heartbeat) but I can definitely see the connection now that you mention it - unfortunately, in this scenario, you're a smart cookie

Dear Spiroll,

I am sorry you took my concern
for your 'condition' with such vitriol.

I was merely sharing with you what I
saw as a possible answer to a lot of what
you yourself posed as problems in your life,
ie. the anxiety disorder and the overweight
situation.

I find that despite the fact that there are
a few pinheaded rightwing wacko bible bangers
(not my taste) in OA that it is a safe place to
discuss issues of life, and a great support group
if you need to lose weight. PERIOD.

If you don't wanna try it, fine. I still stick
by everyting else in my post to you, and
on re-reading it twice, I feel you might have
been a bit too defensive in your attacks on
me for posting what I did.

Good luck with your life, and enjoy it as much
as possible. We only get one.

PS: As for the double post, I am but an average
person and I am bound to make mistakes. But I
did notice the other day that if you go into EDIT
and change paragraphs to conform to a certain
width and such that sometimes you get a double post.

Ok, I was quiet earlier, despite being uncomfortable with your earlier posts, but now I have to get my two cents in. I happen to be a Christian as well as a Republican and find your assertion that I'm a "wacko" and a "pinhead" to be quite insulting.

I understand that this is "not your taste", just as there are many people on these boards who have belief systems and lifestyles that I do not adhere to. However I respect them as well as their beliefs, and would never think of refering to someone with a differing ideology as a "pinhead" or a "wacko". I think it's wonderful that these boards allow us to be friendly with such diverse people who we might never have a chance to meet in the "real world".

I'm not defending myself or my beliefs, merely letting you know that I would have found the above quote insulting no matter who you were refering to.

Hi there, I suffer from anxiety. I don't usually have panic attacks, and when I have them, I tend to retch rather than getting the normal heart pounding can't breathe thing, though I've had that a couple of times too.

I was agraphobic for about 2 years, but I'd had a breakdown and was classed as having severe clinical depression, and the agraphobia went as I began to get better. For me it wasn't the going out that bothered me, it was going out and somebody I knew seeing me, so I'd mostly only go out after dark (thank god for 24 hour supermarkets or i'd have starved to death).

However, I still suffer from anxiety, it's just the slow burn nagging type rather than full blown panic these days.

Dear TessBook,

I wasn't addressing the rightwing comments
to you. I was speaking only to SPIROL who is
a WICCAN.

And for the record, I don't know that you were
who I was talking about. There are fine Christian
people and then even you would probably admit that
there were some that were Rightwing Wackos
in the Christian Church. Snake Handler's come to
mind as a most obvious example. I dare not go
on for I 'might' offend some here and that is not
my intent.

But my point about OA stands. OA is an
organization whose only requirement for
membership is that you desire to abstain
from overeating, and when people
who I consider to be Rightwing Bible Banging
Jesus 'botherers' try to tell me how I should
worship, that does raise my ire. But that having
been said, I still stand by the idea that OA
is a supportive place for people with
difficulties in life and with weight issues
to discuss their problems in an anonymous
and safe environment.

But this whole thread is getting radically OT.
My original comments to SPIROL were meant
to be helpful and I saw on rereading the original
post nothing that should have been taken otherwise.

Have a nice day.

Hi Alisbabe,

So sorry to hear what you've been through, but glad it's gotten at least a bit better.

A lot of here do or have suffered from agraphobia (not to mention the depression), so we can certainly relate. I didn't leave my house one summer while in high school. The high level of my panic was incredible. As a 16 year old I had no idea what was wrong with me, but I was conviced I was either possessed or losing my mind. Neither option seemed too appealing.

There are some good links on here re anxiety and vitamin D. I'm about to start trying it myself, to see if it helps. Also, Lisa has given a link to her awesome website - I highly recommend it.

There's a wonderful group here, and they've been incredibley helpful and supportive to me in the past week (I don't even think they have any idea what they do for others! They all deserve wings! ) Hope you come back!

Ned, please feel free to contribute to this thread in relation to anxiety disorders. You're welcome here, but let's just drop the OA topic.

Thanks.

There are two types of exercise - aerobic, which raises your heartrate, and anaerobic, which doesn't. You might want to look into anaerobic exercise, like weight lifting (which is what I do anyway).

Whoa - missed the whole OA 'discussion'. I don't know anything about it so I can't comment.

It seems my anxiety bout is on the way out (hey, I'm a poet ) since things have calmed down at work and I've put myself on a strict "no-extra-work" plan for a little while. It's hard for me not to be running around like a chicken with it's head cut off - I guess I'm addicted to the rush of adrenalin?? Anyway, Thanks so much for your support while going thru it and don't take this to mean that I don't want to continue visiting with you - that's the bright side to this bout - I made new friends!

Take care!!

I also would suggest yoga or pilates. I prefer it to aerobics, and I'm sore afterwards so I know it works.
