Talking packets

Hi, Itsjoyful.

Almost every sweetener in packets tries to standardize to roughly equivalent to the sweetness of 2 teaspoons of sugar.

There is a lot of variation, but it's a place to start from.

I find, no matter what sweetener or recipe I'm using, I have to check the taste.... so the rule for me is: Taste As You Go!

Unhappy Stevia Update

Well, I received my small bottle of Stevia..and I am utterly dissapointed in it. 1/4 tspn. is supposed to be equivalent to 2 tspns. sugar...well I got my coffee and real cream ready to go...put in my 1/4 tspn. and tasted...I about gagged!!!

It was soooo bitter...and did not remotely taste like anything sweet....and it's 96%. I studied up on this stuff before I bought it....I am bummed....there goes my whipped cream!!!

Any suggestions out there?? Perhaps I used it wrong.

Thanks.

Bellla

Default all is not wasted

i tried the liquid, and did not like it. i use the powder form, and it comes with a little, tiny, tiny, itsy, bitsy spoon measurer. i use one spoonful and it works great. just remember it's not sugar. it won't taste the same as sugar, but it is sweet and you can get used to it. try the powder, try a little at a time.
good luck, hth

Default differences....

Every batch and bottle seems to be different. The liquid Stevia I've seen in the stores here (all 3 brands) come with a dropper. I use the dropper and taste as I go, and simply don't take any advertised measurements for granted. I've learned this the hard way, just like you, Bella.

It's very very usual for Stevia (and any other sweetener) to have a very strong or bitter aftertaste when there is TOO much in the serving....

I agree with Judi .. stevia crosses the line from sweet to bitter when concentrated. I tested this by putting a drop of the concentrated liquid on my tongue ... mega-bitter! Then I put a drop in some water .. the result was pleasantly sweet. In this case, definitely Less is More

Warning .. don't ever buy the green stevia leaf powder. Ugghh. Tastes like something scraped off a rotted log in the forest, only sweet.

my 2¢

Default hi JustaGirl

It's perfectly fine to be shy

Judi (IslandGirl) is very knowledgeable about different products, I think she just meant what country or state you're from. We have members from Canada, USA, UK, Australia & NZ, Malaysia, Middle East, and Europe!

I found the JaJa stevia website ... http://www.jajagroup.com/HBADivision/jajastevia.htm ... there is good information, and of course a lot of advertising to buy THEIR particular product. It appears that the product is indeed filler-free, so you should be fine to use it, as long as you're not allergic to the stevia plant (it's possible).

Hope this is helpful,

Doreen

doreen,
thank you so much for going to all that trouble just to look up info for someone else . that's so sweet (no pun intended *hehe*). i think i might try the jaja brand. if i do, i'll let you all know how it was. it claims to have a different taste than other stevia.
thanks again doreen

Default goodness...

Doreen's not our Senior/Super Moderator for nothing.

True, I thought you could, at your OWN behest and without providing any personal detail, go to the Local LowCarber subforum (e.g., the US subforum) and look for that particular product knowledge.

I'll keep an eye out for the JaJa product here in Canada. The shaker top sounds handy.

i received my jaja stevia yesterday. though it has a better taste than the extract i had been trying (by another brand), i think it will take some time to acquire a taste for it.
but oh well, it's worth it if it will help me stop using aspartame

Thumbs up JAJA Stevia

I just wanted to post an update. Just as i was starting to aquire a taste for the stevia, I ran out (i had only ordered a sampler bottle). anyway, i liked it enough that i reordered. As an aspartame addict, I ended up using about 1/8 the aspartame i would usually use because of my gradual replacement with the stevia . hopefully with my second order it will continue to decrease until i don't use that poison anymore. i really hope so.
