Default Xylitol - side effects?

Of course, I know not to believe everything I read, and most sites don't mention it but WebMD says:

Xylitol is safe in the amounts found in foods. It seems safe as a medicine for most adults in amounts up to about 50 grams per day. Avoid higher doses. There is some concern that extremely high doses for long periods of time (more than three years) can cause tumors. Xylitol can cause diarrhea and intestinal gas. It is probably safe for children as a medicine in amounts up to 20 grams per day.

Livestrong doesn't mention that and neither does Sideeffects.com although they do mention the normal things for sugar alcohols. I couldn't find anything at pubmed.gov that suggests Xylitol causes tumors.

So I'm guessing it's safe for long term usage. Does anyone have any negative results or respected links (it's always best to check out both sides of the story).

Thanks.

Bob

Well, chocolate can also kill a dog.

Everything I've read indicates it is by far the most benign of the sugar alcohols, and might even be beneficial for "blood sugar control."

I've become quite sensitive to sugar alcohols since going gluten free and healing my gut. So I consider that proof it's different in some way.

But in the small amounts I use it in, I get hot chocolate and baked goods in the winter.

My preferred form is Truvia, a mix of stevia and Xylitol.

Thanks.

My preference is pure Stevia extract, which tastes better to me for most things (like coffee and tea) but there are cases where Stevia is a lesser choice than Splenda (like making fat bombs). So a health food store clerk suggested Xylitol instead of the Splenda.

I like the taste of it, but Xylitol makes my stomach hurt. I prefer erythritol, preferably Swerve.

My preferred form is Truvia, a mix of stevia and Xylitol.

I think you mean erythritol not xylitol in Truvia. http://truvia.com/about

Splenda makes my kidneys hurt. I use SweetLeaf. It's Stevia with Inulin.
Aspartame makes me sick. I just thought they'd like to know that about animals as a lot of people share their food. (I'm one too!)

And I personally wonder, if it affects dog's insulin, could it do the same to a person?

Doh! You are correct. And I have a bag of erythritol I got for making brownies!

Xylitol is in the gum I occasionally chew, also without bad effect, but then, I don't swallow it.

Must... check... labels.
