I don't live in Canada but I would think taxing sugary foods should come first if at all...It's similar to limiting the size of sugary drinks in NY...what prevents you from refilling?

I do live in Canada and haven't read this news. Can you provide a link? Also, we have two levels of government: federal and provincial. The federal government already charges a tax on pretty much everything...the GST (goods and serivces tax.) Normal (grocery store) food is exempt, but junk food never has been exempt. (Oh, unless you buy a dozen donuts at a grocery store, no GST, but if you buy one at a donut store, GST! WTH?)

ANYWAY...a province can decide to charge a tax, but that's a province by province basis. It drives us all nuts. I live in Saskatchewan, and haven't heard about a fatty food tax at all.

And i don't think any province levies a tax on food, even junk. I could very well be wrong. But NO, I haven't seen any talk about taxing fatty foods -- I hope that would get a huge protest! I'm in BC and we've reversed the HST but the province is dragging it's heels, so the repeal doesn't kick in until sometime around mid-2013. Funny how they can arrange for a new tax to be charged withing days, but to repeal it takes many months! Can you say bureaucracy and unwillingness to give up any source our revenue???? I'll shut up -- I feel a rant coming on!!!

I've seen SOME political parties talk about "sin" taxes on junk food. But I think they are usually talking about "fatty foods" such as chips and Big Mac's - not "fatty foods" such as beef and coconut oil ;-)
