Lightbulb Gum Disease?

Gum Disease? You got it?

I did even on LC, plus bad breath and tooth staining. After root planing and antibiotics I had to schedule a cleaning every 4 months which barely helped. Now with the cure I am back to two cleanings a year. On my way to none.

Brushing, flossing, water pix all help, but to get to the root [pun] of the problem you must change the flora of the mouth. I had my saliva DNA tested and now it's clean of all pathogens except one that can cause stains, but I have none.

Not sure what works best yet, but in addition to the usual dental hygiene I have always done I brush with essential oils and use homemade kefir for a mouthwash at night.

Now I have added another extract that could, might help:

"In 1983 Vipont Laboratories started to market Viadent toothpaste and mouth-rinse [no longer marketed], both containing an extract of the bloodroot which is said to be excellent for reducing plaque growth. The American Dental Association said that the extract, the alkaloid Sanguinarine, was a promising plaque fighter. This extract will do for gum disease what fluoride has done in fighting tooth decay."

Ill probably switch to this oil blend as it's cheaper than making my own:

Another dental thread from several months ago (started, I think, by Ms Arielle) led to the information about Viadent & bloodroot. I looked into it, and ordered some bloodroot powder from a herb supplier I trust. 5 months ago my dental hygienist told me that if I couldn't get the plaque etc under control I might need to be referred to a periodontist. My teeth were fine, but my gums were not. Very soon after I started using baking soda to brush with, and a much softer brush, and then a sprinkle of bloodroot powder on the brush at every brushing. My theory was brushing more often, and less vigorously. 3 weeks ago I had another cleaning; the easiest cleaning I have had in years. The hygienist was astounded at the improvement; very little bleeding, very little plaque (and in the past I was told that I had a tendency to make a lot of plaque). Interestingly, I was away from home for awhile during this time, and rather than take baking soda & bloodroot powder with me I just took what had been my regular toothpaste. I felt, for the week I was away, that my teeth were not properly clean, and was so glad to get back to my (now regular) cleaning regimen. I'm a believer; this stuff works!

Hi Verbena, I looked on Iherb and they don't have it. May I ask where did you find some?

Oh wait, I found this but it's liquid and blended with alcohol.

I get mine from Mountain Rose Herbs https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/
I have been buying from them for years, and was pleasantly surprised, when we moved to Oregon, to find that they are in our next "big city", only an hour away.
Good company; I highly recommend them.

Viadent is no longer on the market. Colgate bought it and killed it.

There is a product Ibsab that is a tooth powder consisting of finely milled salt, baking soda, prickly ash bark, and peppermint oil.

Works better than any toothpaste on the market for gum disease.

I bought some probiotics for my cat's IBD a while back and it came with a box of probiotics for your gums. You suck them until they dissolve. I don't really have gum issues though.

Brushing 1-2 times a day with plain baking soda eliminated my gingivitis. A soft brush, not hard. Baking soda is very cheap. Nothing special required.

I have it running in my family. Everybody on my father's side lost their teeth by 40.

I credit first the Viadent and later the Ipsab for saving mine. When Viadent took the blood root out, I bough extract and put it on the regular toothpaste. I don't use the Ibsab more than once per day because it seems a bit abrasive.

I get them cleaned 4 times a year, and the periodontist says, "Just keep doing what you are doing."

Bob, if Ibsab is baking soda based, and no other added abrasive, then its less abrasive than dozens of standard tooth pastes.

I think it's the finely milled salt that is abrasive. Anyway I figure once a day with the Ibsab and the next time(s) with a non-fluoride toothpaste, usually something from the "health food" store with CoQ10 and Folate in it gives me the best of both worlds.

I also rotate different kinds of floss, as they clean in different ways. I stay away from Glide and other teflon based flosses because I don't trust the PFAs to be harmless.

So far it's working. I've had my teeth 30 years longer than most of the people in my dad's side of the family.

"Just keep doing what you are doing." They all say that

My dentist finally said he would look into my routine. I think the DNA lab saliva result tweaked his curiosity.

Now using "Secrets of the Tribe" bloodroot tincture daily. Peppermint and baking soda are all helpful, but clove and manuka oils prevent bacterial biofilm formation by blocking adhesion and bug quorum sensing.
