Default KFC set to test-market Beyond Meat "fried chicken"

Only a single location so far. Shucks.

KFC is testing Beyond Meat plant-based fried chicken

Brian Sozzi, Yahoo FinanceAugust 26, 2019

No chance in hell that Colonel Sanders could have imagined this day when he founded his friendly chicken joint Kentucky Fried Chicken back in 1952.

From that point to this very day, KFC has hawked wings, breasts and drum sticks ripped from the carcass of ever fatter farm-raised chickens. Until now. Yum Brands-owned KFC) said Monday it will launch “Beyond Fried Chicken” in partnership with the surging plant-based food purveyor Beyond Meat.

“KFC is an iconic part of American culture and a brand that I, like so many consumers, grew up with. To be able to bring Beyond Fried Chicken, in all of its KFC inspired deliciousness to market, speaks to our collective ability to meet the consumer where they are and accompany them on their journey. My only regret is not being able to see the legendary Colonel himself enjoy this important moment, ” said Ethan Brown, founder and CEO, Beyond Meat in a statement.

The quick details as you salivate before lunch:

- If you are not in the Atlanta area, don’t expect to grab “Beyond Fried Chicken.” KFC is calling this a test at one location in Smyrna, Ga.

- Said test kicks off August 27.

- Both nuggets and boneless wings are available. A six-piece or 12-piece combo meal (includes a side and a drink) will set you back $6.49 and $8.49, respectively. This is a decent discount to KFC’s normal prices for each combo, likely to drive trial of the product among consumers. For instance, a 12-piece boneless chicken tender combo at KFC is about $12.99.

- Beyond Meat nor KFC disclosed the calorie counts or ingredients of the plant-based chicken. But Beyond Meat’s grilled chicken contains about 20 ingredients — the main one being pea protein.

No doubt this is a win win for both KFC and Beyond Meat right out of the box. For KFC, it can drive some much-needed buzz (same-store sales have only risen 2% at KFC year to date) ahead of the inevitable larger rollout. And when that happens, KFC will have a popular item on the menu ... priced at a premium to most other things it sells.

As for Beyond Meat, its stock has plunged 34% the past month since it surprised Wall Street in late July with a secondary offering. The test at KFC will go a long way to remind investors of the company’s potential with major fast food chains. Already this year, Beyond Meat has debuted breakfast sandwiches at Dunkin’ Donuts to a burger at Canadian-based Tim Hortons to meatless meatballs at Subway.

Ball is back in your court, Impossible Foods — maybe the fish you are reportedly working on finds itself on the menus at Red Lobster?

"Both nuggets and boneless wings are available". Oh good grief, why even call them "boneless"? Do they think people will expect a plant-based bone in there, or maybe a stick of bamboo??

Something else to avoid, not that I've eaten anything from KFC in years ...

Just listened to a podcast with Nina Teicholz (of Big Fat Surprise) who said veganism is funded by the processed food industry.

Which makes so much sense.

It does make sense, and the cereal manufacturers can easily masquerade their processed "foods" as healthy whole grain goodness with the added sugars and fortified vitamins while staying within the vegan guidelines. More evidence that the "plant-based" and vegan drumbeats are heavily funded by those with deep pockets. Feeding the world is not really simply stimulated by ethics, the primary stimulant is revenue. Nothing wrong with that as long as the conflicts of the messages are understood.

And now . . . we have cereal "meat."

Nuggets and boneless wings? Surely they'll be breaded and deep fried. Sounds like they'll be claiming they're good for you because it's plant based instead of being made from inherently evil animal meat, while at the same time inevitably also being branded as unhealthy because it's deep fried. I see conflicting health standards... Wonder if their customers will see the same?

Oh that also raises the question - will the real chicken and the fake chicken be deep fried in the same oils? If it is, then they'll need to post warning statements: Vegans beware! Your fake chicken may have been contaminated by real chicken being cooked in the same oil!

Hmmmm. Food allergies. Calorie counts. Both important to consumers. Thought ingredients and calories had to be listed. Some ingedients can be hidden to protect proprietary flavors.

Im having visions of humans dying like all the dogs on non-grain based dog foods....

Whoa...deja vu! Does anybody remember the urban legend that was going around the internet in the 90's, that Kentucky Fried Chicken changed their name to KFC because it didn't contain real chicken anymore? Lol.

According to beyondmeat.com's page about this project:
Is Beyond Fried Chicken 100% plant-based?
All ingredients are 100% plant-based but Beyond Fried Chicken is prepared in a shared fryer.

I wonder how many testers will order their "vegan" nuggets with ranch dipping sauce?

If there's a benefit to the vegan diet--much of it is liable to be the fact that it's so restrictive that it's harder to be constantly snacking. Office birthday party? Oh dear, the cake isn't vegan.

This is a good test to see whether associations of meat intake and poor outcomes were due to the meat itself (ha!) or the crud it's often eaten with--the bun, the fries, the breading.
