The actual *idea* of chickens, and getting your own eggs, seems like such a good idea. But yes, it seems like a lot of work, and what would I do about my chickens if I wanted to go on a vacation? (assuming that's ever possible again). I have a wonderful sitter who watches my cats and dog, but she doesn't watch chickens. LOL. Not to mention that zoning laws here prohibit chickens anyway.
A month or so ago my nephew and his girlfriend did get a bunch of chicks, but it will be months before they are old enough to start laying. But I kept hoping maybe I could get some eggs from them! But they live about a 30-minute drive away and at present I'm not traveling that far. I have a car that needs 4 new times and an oil change, and I don't want to be sitting in a waiting room for hours while that happens, so just driving very short distances. I haven't even bought gas since the first week in March and usually I go through about a tank a week!
I am trying to stock what I can with non-perishables. I actually bought dried whole egg powder, and now when I make an omelet I use two real eggs and the reconstituted equivalent of a third egg using the powder. Maybe my taste buds are cr*p but the omelet tastes just as good to me as if I'd used all real eggs,
