Default To Lose Weight, Eating Less Is Far More Important Than Exercising More

To Lose Weight, Eating Less Is Far More Important Than Exercising More
By AARON E. CARROLL for the New York Times [June 15, 2015]

One of my family’s favorite shows is “The Biggest Loser.” Although some viewers don’t appreciate how it pushes people so hard to lose weight, the show probably inspires some overweight people to regain control of their lives.

But one of the most frustrating parts of the show, at least for me, is its overwhelming emphasis on exercise . Because when it comes to reaching a healthy weight, what you don’t eat is much, much more important.

Think about it this way: If an overweight man is consuming 1,000 more calories than he is burning and wants to be in energy balance, he can do it by exercising. But exercise consumes far fewer calories than many people think. Thirty minutes of jogging or swimming laps might burn off 350 calories. Many people, fat or fit, can’t keep up a strenuous 30-minute exercise regimen, day in and day out. They might exercise a few times a week, if that.

Or they could achieve the same calorie reduction by eliminating two 16-ounce sodas each day.

Proclamations that people need to be more active are ubiquitous in the media. The importance of exercise for proper weight management is reinforced when people bemoan the loss of gym class in schools as a cause of the obesity epidemic. Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move program places the focus on exercise as a critical component in combating excess weight and obesity.

Exercise has many benefits, but there are problems with relying on it to control weight. First, it’s just not true that Americans, in general, aren’t listening to calls for more activity. From 2001 to 2009, the percentage of people who were sufficiently physically active increased. But so did the percentage of Americans who were obese. The former did not prevent the latter.

Default Exercise Won't Help You Lose Weight by Dr Michael Mosley

Exercise Won't Help You Lose Weight

by Dr Michael Mosley for The Mail On Sunday PUBLISHED: 16:15 EST, 18 June 2016 | UPDATED: 01:35 EST, 19 June 2016

Doing exercise burns calories, so surely it will help you lose weight?
Unfortunately, that is not what usually happens.

The trouble is that people underestimate how much exercise they need to do. To burn off a muffin, you would have to run at least four miles at a moderate pace.

To burn 2 lb of fat, you would have to run at least two marathons.

We tend to reward ourselves for doing exercise by eating more, while unconsciously compensating for calories burnt by moving less.

Exercise is great for the heart and the brain, and it is an important way to control blood sugar levels. But cutting calories and changing what you eat is a more effective way to achieve weight loss.

Default How Exercise Shapes You, Far Beyond the Gym

My (bkloots) favorite passages from that article are:

What’s remarkable and encouraging about these studies is that the subjects weren’t exercising at heroic intensities or volumes.

They were simply doing something that was physically challenging for them – going from no exercise to some exercise; one need not be an elite athlete or fitness nerd to reap the bulletproofing benefits of exercise.

The truth, cliché as it may sound, is this: "When you develop physical fitness, you’re developing life fitness, too."
I totally agree about her favorite passages from the article b/c they are mine as well!

On another note: I lived near the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany many many moons ago...

I can hardly believe that I have been in Maintenance for 4 and 1/2 years. Holy Hannah! How'd that happen?? I have never ever in my yo-yo dieting history been this successful.

What a difference when I totally committed 100% to my WOE/WOL w/o cheating! B/c the only person I was truly cheating was myself! I was cheating myself out of good mental and physical HEALTH!

What I've noticed is that I don't say "I CAN'T have that" when presented with carb-age crap... I say to myself "I DON'T want that"... what a total mind set change! B/c it truly is a choice.

I 💚 how my WOE/WOL makes me feel; it makes me feel EMPOWERED! I CONTROL my food, my food does NOT CONTROL me!

Default Hump Day, 10 October 2018

I wrote this in De's journal this am and wanted to remember it here b/c this is really soooo true about me!

She was mentioning how it was less crowded at her gym on Monday and she thought it was due to the 3-day w/e...
Imma too much a creature of habit so it doesn't matter if it's a holiday or not, my exercising takes priority and it doesn't loom over me like some evil spector all day long b/c I know me, I can procrastinate with the best of 'em on stuff that I dislike doing.

"Get 'er DONE Early" is my MOTTO b/c seriously, I really don't like exercising BUT I KNOW how important it is to be the BEST I can be physically esp at my age.
