And 'gravy' became 'spaghetti sauce', 'local beers' became 'craft beers', 'fraud' became 'fake news', police men and women became 'law enforcement officers', 'jails' became 'correctional facilities', what is essentially a 'station wagon' with a boxier shape became a 'sports utility vehicle' when there is absolutely nothing sporty about it, 'computer programs' became 'apps', and so on.

I guess I joined you on that tangent, because the evolution of language is a source of amusement to me.

BTW, white vinegar diluted with water is a good weed killer for cracks in sidewalks and between paving stones. And unlike "Round-up" and so many other herbicides, isn't classified as a carcinogen.

I've heard fizzing baking soda and vinegar cleans slow drains too. I had no luck with it, but a plunger or a snake usually work fine.

Mixing vinegar & baking soda looks good, but the chemical reaction turns it into water. So use them separately.

My cleaner uses white vinegar, except for wood floors. I don't actually follow her around. I just know the house always smells really fresh when she's done, and it's not a flowery perfume.

I went back to find out what this interesting thread was originally about. It looks like we're still on topic of "stuff you find in a grocery store." So I'll post this.

This morning at the grocery store I picked up one of those yellow boxes in the lunchmeat section called Lunchables. You probably know what I'm talking about, as they are undoubtedly the convenience food of choice for busy parents, and probably the kind of thing kids covet at school. The contents are shocking, and so is the price. For about $2.50, you get something like 330-440 calories (depending on the items), including a Capri Sun "fruit" beverage and a candy bar, with a dab of cheese and some kind of lunch meat and crackers. Yikes! Diabetes in a box, right?

American grocery stores are miracles of abundance and choice. But the choices are the key to a lifetime of health, or not.

Boiling water will also work well for those weeds among the paving stones. Too frugal to actually boil water for that purpose, I have used hot water left over from other uses. From the canner, for example, after canning tomatoes, or the water used to boil or steam eggs.

My kids know to steer clear of this junk. At least when Im around. I point out that buying a package of deli meat and deli cheese is much cheaper,, and no crackers. Most deli's have a prepackaged section now. The prices are steep, but not as ridiculous as the Lunchable type. The deli's know they have a captive consummer so charge $10/lb for roast beef. Sheeesh.

Pour the baking soda down the drain dry, then pour in the vinegar. It makes an "explosion" and that clears the drain. That treatment is also good as maintenance.

A modified version is how I clean things with it. I keep the vinegar in a spray bottle and the baking soda in a separate, shaker, container.

Otherwise, as pointed out, losing the fizz means losing the cleaning power.

When I was a child, my franchise of choice was the Transformers. I got my first toy when I was 6 and began collecting them for a number of years. I fell in love with the original cartoon series and read a few of the comics. Some kids were into GI Joe, others X-Men and so on, but Transformers was my thing.

It was in 1986 when the Transformers cartoon movie came out that I hit peak fanboy. The characters had become closer to me than many of my few RL friends. But there's an extended battle sequence during the early stages of the movie, where several of those characters that meant so much to me were actually killed. For a kid's cartoon, it was actually pretty violent looking back, and certainly traumatic at the time, being one of the very few occasions in my life that watching a movie had brought me to tears.

What it meant for me by the end of it was that the few original characters who had survived would mean so much more to me, and I was so grateful that those precious few had made it through.

And that's pretty much how I felt that day at the supermarket. It was like I was re-living my very own version of the Battle of Autobot City, where so many things that I used to eat were now off limits to me on the basis of the carb count on the label. A whole new round of characters were killed off that day: no more flavoured milk, no more ice cream, no more pizzas, no more pies, no more 2 minute noodles. The death of bread was like the death of Optimus Prime. But I was so grateful for the precious few survivors of my old diet, like chicken, tuna, sausages, and perhaps the most important of all: cheese.

It was definitely a rough ol' time emotionally, just like the movie had been. But by the movie's end, I would come to have made a few new friends, just as I would come to make a whole new group of friends with my WOE going forward. And I've never really looked back since.

This might very well be the best geek-out I've read in my entire life.

Bravo, sir, bravo. (tears in my eyes; standing up and clapping) 5 stars.

(p.s. That description of grief over the foods was spot-on.)

The newspaper grocery day sale flyers are a constant form of amusement to us. Page after page of ads for frankenfood products we never buy. When you have been away from that sort of thing for a few decades, it actually seems amazing that people buy that stuff.

Heading to the store for a quick pop-in to see if there's any marked down meat and then strawberries for my kids ($1.25lb!), and then they just started carrying a local coffee that's my absolute favorite and it's on sale this week so I'm going to grab a couple bags The meat dept. guy always gives me such weird looks-I'm that weird person who two weeks ago bought 15lbs of ground beef ($5 for 3lb chubs!!), along with every marked down meat they had, followed by my stop last week where I bought 11lbs of petite sirloin steak, because they were running a crazy $3.99lb special on it, along with all their marked down meat Both my freezer crispers are full now and I'm starting on the deep freezer He was stocking shelves when I was buying the ground beef and ran into my parents, and I was telling them that I now eat a HFLC style of eating and pretty much just eat meat, eggs and dairy. He was totally eves dropping and kept giving me the side eye, lol.

I do the same thing. I come with a list of sale items from the flyer, but walk the same circuit every week past the frozen wild salmon and chubs of ground GF beef, bison, lamb, turkey & chicken, which often will be on an unadvertised special and typically stock up on 4-8 lbs each of whatever is on sale, then past the fresh meats and canned fish. I rarely buy protein at full price and always have several choices stocked in my freezer. Though my meat guy smiles when he sees me - they should all welcome their best real meat customers in a Beyond Meat world. They also sell imperfectly shaped/sized eggs in flats of 20 or 30 that few people buy. Once I got a flat of all huge double-yolked eggs for 1/3 the price of an equivalent number of matched eggs in cartons!

It is bizarre how, when I hit the store for ME, I run a quick route of the outside aisle and ignore 90% of the "food" there.
