i tried atkins country white bread (which really looks like wheat) and it was okay. the slices were very small though and at $5 a loaf...

trader joes here carries a brand - fit for life or something - but i haven't tried it. didn't look too great.

i did find another brand at my local health food store. it's called 'organic vegetarian low carb whole wheat bread' by able farms. it says only 5g of carbs per slice on the label but has 2g of fiber so i figure 3g per slice. it is also expensive at $5 a loaf but the slices were much bigger than atkins brand and the texture is nicer. i keep it in my freezer and only use it when i want bread for my egg salad.

My Whole Foods store has Nature's Oven brand bread, it's called "Low Carb I". I don't know if there's a II or III or...

It's fresh (not frozen) but you have to freeze it ASAP because it doesn't have any preservatives. It's about $5 for a 24 oz loaf, and it's 11 carbs / slice - 8 fiber/slice = 3.

I like it because of the heavy dose of fiber. It tastes thick, dense and just like a hearty multi grain bread. I will definately buy more, but at the cost, I try to have 3-4 slices / week (plus I am trying to stay very close to induction foods). I've only added in nuts, the bread, mac nut butter, homemade LC strawberry jam and LC soy milk. (see a meal there? )

It;s loaded with tons of vitamins and Omega3 too! I recommended it to my Whole Foods buddy who isn't LC-ing. I think it's that tasty.

I've heard the Nature's Own is very good from several people who can buy it. It's not available here in the NW to my knowledge. I buy Food For Life low carb bread - savory herb. It's pretty good and has about 4 net per slice.

I live in the middle of nowhere... there is ONE store that carries ONE brand of low-carb bread at 6.99 a loaf... and THAT store is 65 miles away!

So I've tried the mixes, and they're okay. At least I don't have to spend my life's savings on shipping... I have learned to make "gluten bread" from a recipe I got online and "tinkered" with a bit. At roughly 4 grams of carbs a slice by my figuring, and at less than $3 cost for a dozen buns or slices (buns DO turn out better, IMO) I'll stick with that, and use the mixes for an occasional treat.

Default bread

Nature's Own 100% Whole Wheat bread has 7 net grams of fiber per slice. It is good, regular bread, decently priced and found in your grocery store.

That'd be nice. Too bad about my wheat allergy though...

I had the Whole-Wheat version (I know you can't have wheat) as a crust for an open-faced Ham & Cheese Calzone. Yum-my!!!!

In Indy, we have Bread of Life at 3g/slice but it goes back quickly so freeze it if you buy it. Not sure what the ingredients were but they have White & Raisin. The white was decent toasted w/butter (kind of reminded me of a english muffin). I haven't tried the Raisin.

Default OMG real low carb bread

and it's not $10 a loaf! Natures Own now makes a reduced carb 7 carb per slice bread but it has 2 grams of fiber so for us Atkins people that is only 5 effective carbs per slice. I had a toasted slice today with my over easy eggs and it was heaven!

Sorry I forgot to tell. I got some at my Orlando Super Target for 1.99 a loaf. It's not large loaf but it's enough for 2 people for a week.

No you can't tell the difference and it doesn't taste "off" at all. I am not a wheat bread fan but this does the trick because I love to sop up my egg yolks with bread lol.

I use soy flour with baking powder to make pancakes and when I want a burger bun I do the same but I leave out the splenda and vanilla flavoring and use 2 pancakes for a bun. It is also good wrapped around a frankfurter.

Britony,

What's the full recipe?

Has anyone used Flax Flour in anything?

I have never really measured as it was trial and error till I found something that I liked but this is pretty close I believe.

4 T soy flour
3 T heavy cream
1 T oil
1 t vanilla flavoring
3/4 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
2 eggs
1 t splenda

I sometimes replace part of the soy flour with almond flower for a nuttier taste. If I want thicker or thinner pancakes I add more or less flour to the bowl. Cook like you would any pancakes. I like them cooked well for using other than pancakes.
I can't see why flax meal would not work just as well but have not tried it yet.
