Substitution for sweet Marsala

Karen - I saw this recipe at Epicurious.com: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/r...ws/views/232104

I would love to revise it to a lower carb version, but am stymied over what to sub the sweet Marsala with...any suggestions?

Here's a few suggestions, add to taste

- good quality balsamic vinegar
- brandy, bourbon, or rum

I would use bourbon, and up the vanilla in the recipe.
