Lightbulb L-Carnitine

I'm presently taking 500mg of L-Carnitine daily. How do you know if you're taking enough? too much? I know they sell it in 250mg capsules yet I read that others take up to 1000 mg daily. How do you know which is right?

Dosage depends on why you're taking it. At the top of this forum there is a stuck thread with various resources for supplements, called "Supplement Resources". Both supplementwatch and wholehealthmd have reviews of Carnitine with dosage recommendations for various objectives. I believe that Dr. Atkins gives recommended doses in his book?

From supplementwatch:

Quote:
Doses of 2 to 6 grams per day are typically recommended for cardiovascular, sports performance and weight loss benefits – although the effectiveness of any dose of carnitine for sports or weight loss effects are not impressive. As a “heart health” nutrient, approximately 2 grams per day of carnitine may provide some benefits in terms of promoting general heart function.
