Default Hello and Help please

Good to find some folk who are ageing wonderfully well !! My age is 74 so good to know I am not alone. Many years ago I got into the lowcarb life style which is so beneficial for my health. As a result of nursing my husband who eventually died 4 years ago and having my gallbladder removed I fell off the wagon. One big problem now is digesting fat. Hopefully there is someone out there who has overcome this kind of thing and advice would be most appreciated. I am doing lowcarb but not high fat and get hungry. Is under 50 carbs a day any good?
This thread seems very quiet at the moment so here's hoping someone sees this - it would be great to get to know you x

Welcome. I'm well over 50 and feeling fit as a fiddle eating low carb and avoiding Grains, Potatoes and Sugar currently. In fact I'm leaning toward an even lower "carb count" lately and concentrating on getting enough protein to maintain my active lifestyle.

Less than 50g carbohydrate a day may work for you. Give us an example of where those 50 carbs might come from as far as the foods you eat.

Seems you are the only person on here besides me! You welcomed me when I joined and introduced myself so thank you.
I eat very similarly to you. I do have a small portion of porridge first thing but strictly lowcarb veg with protein ie chicken fish lamb pork cheese eggs by way of protein. I roast my veg or stir fry and use virgin olive oil or coconut oil. I get the munchies though in the evenings sometimes.

I do low carb, moderate fat, high protein. I find by increasing my protein and lowering my fat I get much less hungry. I eat primarily meat, fish and low carb veggies, no grains no starch, no sugar. I can't eat eggs or dairy so they're out too. I've been eating this way for a long time although it is only in the last 6 months that I lowered the amount of fat and increased the amount of protein. I track everything on cronometer which keeps me honest. I am 71 and take no prescription meds. This way of eating really works as long as you stay with it which gets easier the longer you eat this way.

Sounds good. You mention "porridge" and "lowcarb veg" please do us a favor and list these out for analysis - trying to figure out where 50 carbs would come from - are you counting the fiber as well?

Thanks!

Thanks for replies. Very helpful Jean and shall go to your information you kindly forwarded. Thud I eat 40gms scotch porridge oats with almond milk which is 24carbs and 3.5 fibre for porridge. Almond milk 0. I am lactose intolerant. Butternut squash carrots and parsnips are favourites the broccoli cauliflower salad stuff etc. Perhaps I am over estimating. Have a couple of squares of 85% cocoa chocolate 5 carbs.

Each person different as far as what they can tolerate as far as carbs goes (type/amount) See now you do, those foods look pretty basic low carb except the porridge - I've been consuming about that many carbs or less for an entire day, but that's just me and my current plan.

Well we are all different. I'm 68 and have been on this current journey for 14 years now (and did LC before that some 20+ years ago but fell off the wagon. Porridge. butternut squash, carrots and parsnips are all WAY too carby for me. Well I do keep baby carrots around for the grandkids and occasionally will sliver one or two into my veggies. But in general I wouldn't dare eat any of those things.

But it doesn't mean that it can't work for you. But I'd say most of the hardcore long timers here have found over time that they need to cut their carbs lower.

What symptoms do you get when you eat more fat? Many people without gallbladders do well on LCHF but may need an adjustment period. But if you want to try low carb you will have to consider trying to eat more fat eventually. Your food can only be carb, protein or fat and if you cut the carbs only protein and fat are left. People like Dr. Ted Naiman feel we need to eat more protein and less fat but that doesn't mean no fat. You still need a fair amount.

His philosophy is that the grams of protein and fat should be about equal, so that if you need 100g of protein daily you should not have more than 100g of fat.

I can't quite get to those macros yet! Fat does such a good job at keeping me satiated. But then again, I still have my gallbladder.

Heard a doc on youtube discussing lack of gall bladder. Apparently liver can increase its output when a fatty meal is eaten slowly. No gobbling food. But a leisurely meal sents the signals to icrease output just as fatty food arrives at that area of gi.

That was new to me.

Sorry I cant renember his name, but will link if I find that info again.

( And Im in the TOF club too.)

I am 86 but I still have my gall bladder
Because it is so much harder to lose weight at my age, I have slowly eliminated all carbs which means all grains, all fruits except avocados and all vegetables. I still eat cheese. I do not eat added fats except the butter I use in cooking meats and the whipping cream in creating bernaise sauce. My fats come from my cuts of beef and pork. I am also on a modified intermittent fast

Since we are all different we need to tailor our food to our needs and reactions. I am terribly responsive to carbs now - even small amounts slow weight loss or even create a gain.

Good luck. It is a slow frustrating process of self-discovery

The support here is so helpful. I realise I can do a moderate fat low carb now and shall cut back on the high carb veg while eliminating the porridge. This coronavirus has woken me up as obesity is a real danger. My fat is around my middle - 28lbs needs to go. Shall up the walking now I am allowed out again after being shielded. Thank you all so much for the replies.

Default Update

Reading and applying the helpful information I have read on this page I am happy to say that after 2 weeks there is already significant improvement. Mainly my digestive issues which have plagued me for 5 years are largely resolved! My clothes are looser - I don't get hooked on scales as this has been a negative in previous attempts. A healthy lifestyle is the goal here. I am enjoying having no cravings it is so liberating - many times I just have two meals and keep everything to around 20 carbs. On You tube I saw a lot of delicious recipes by 'Dot2trot' which is timely as boredom with food can blow it. Have sent for the Ketogenetic Cookbook which was recommended. Will have to adapt recipes to moderate fat. Are you in Ketosis on 20 carbs with moderate fat? Thanks for the support it has motivated me greatly.

Ketosis on 20 carbs with moderate fat?

I'd say generally yes. This is the case for me and I can always register BHB ketones (Keto Mojo blood meter) at 20 carbs or less no matter how much protein and/or fat I can shove into my food hole.

Have you seen the dietdoctor.com website? It's a totally amazing resource! Lot's of fabulous recipes there.

Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt, the founder of dietdoctor.com, feels that most folks without gallbladders can still do fine on LCHF.

Checked out Diet Doctor - what a great resource. Going to make Bone Broth as soon as I have the gear. Has anyone here made it?
