Low Carb Food Website Launched with 30,000+ Products

CarbGenie allows people on low carbohydrate diets such as Atkins and the South Beach Diet to find and compare low carb food from the UK’s most popular supermarkets - a task that has been very difficult until now.

London (PRWEB UK) 7 September 2011

CarbGenie has analysed over 30,000 foods from Tesco and Asda for their nutritional content. Products from Sainsburys, Waitrose and other supermarket chains will be added in the coming weeks.

The site allows an educated decision on food and price - consumers can quickly find low carb food and at the same time discover which supermarket has the lowest price.

CarbGenie highlights the carb content of foods using a traffic light system, making it easy to analyse food at a glance.

Low Carbohydrate diets are experiencing a resurgence thanks to best selling books such as “Why We Get Fat and What to Do About it” and “The Diet Delusion” by award winning science journalist Gary Taubes. This is proven by over 1.8 million carbohydrate related Google searches each month in the UK alone.

CarbGenie was created by Scott Bowler, a low carb dieter and internet entrepreneur with over 10 years experience building commercial websites and applications.

I just registered at the website and have had a look at the entries.
It looks as if they are only listing the "per serving" numbers and not the "per 100 gram" numbers so an awful lo of foods are showing as being "trace" carbs when I know the equivalent food bought in a different supermarket does have "some" carbs. Maybe 1 or 2 per 100 grams, but if the serving size is listed as being 30 grams they can legally say "zero"!!

Anothe oddity is that there is no mention of fibre (spelled fiber) on the displayed labels, even for something like a quiche with veggies and pastry in it, therefore it must have "some" fibre however it is spelled!!

And the "dietary fiber data unavailable" words are printed among the carbohydrate section, above the sugars, not in the usual UK area in its own section, showing it is not included in the carb count!!
So I don't know where he is getting the info from, can't be the actual labels on the product.

Must go send him a message or two!!

It is good that he does seem to ahve all the ingredients listed, so an experienced lowcarber can work out for themself if it is truly a lowcarb product if in doubt because of the numbers maybe being net or total carbs depending where he got the numbers.

Well I sent him a few messages and now the website explains that carb counts shown are net carbs as is normal in UK, and the dietary fiber is listed seperately! Kudos to Scott for taking suggestions on board!!

I don't think it's aiming to make recommendations, but it's very useful for looking up the numbers for what you've eaten

Thanks so much for this link. I have been waiting a long time for
someone to do something like this! Shopping for new products to buy in supermarkets when your lowcarbing can be such a nightmare!

So I'm having a browse around this site and the carbgenie, as I'm approaching week 4 of OWL and am finding myself stuck in a rut.

How do I look work out the NCs of a product from the label?

UK (and most non-USA countries) labels don't count fiber grams as being carbohydrates at all, so the "total carbs" on a UK label = "net carbs" for Atkins.
