I had been dealing with 2nd hand freezers that kept dying on me - that's pricey when everything thaws to the point it has to be thrown out. When the last one died - somewhere in the '90s - I bought the only upright freezer a local repair & sales guy had on hand: a Gibson Heavy Duty Commercial Freezer. They go for around $1500 now, but I know we didn't pay anywhere near that much because we paid cash - no credit card back then.

This has been one of the best appliance buys I've done. At the time, I had never heard of Gibson. It's still going strong. I highly recommend it if you can afford it - or find a nice 2nd hand one that's been treated well.

Thanks, Bonnie! Good to know.

In addition, it's not a food tip, but it's a money saving one: think carefully about that overpriced cleaner aisle. Some, like dishwasher detergent, are specialized, but for general cleaning I LOVE baking soda and vinegar.

I keep a spray bottle of full strength white vinegar and a shaker container of baking soda, and that cleans my whole bathroom better and more efficiently than anything else I've tried. Especially good for those mineral deposits and soap scum. The baking soda is very gentle abrasion, good for pots and pans.

Put a jug of ammonia under the sink, and you have the perfect soak for hairbrushes and can make your own window cleaner. And I've long used it in combination with dish soap to clean carpets, since it also deodorizes, great for kid and pet accidents.

Bleach is tricky (and should NEVER be mixed with ammonia) but a spray bottle of it with some dish soap in the mix is what I use in the shower against mold. I have a white anti-slip mat, I do the bottom of the shower curtain and the crevices, let it sit, and rinse, all in the same space. It degrades to salt and water, and I let that happen. It eliminates the bleach smell by itself this way.

I even make my own shampoo, hand soap, and body wash with Castile soap. I like Dr. Bronner's, which comes in lovely flower scents, and a big container lasts for months with dilution. For hair, follow up with a dilute vinegar rinse and you won't believe how soft and shiny it can get.

These strategies save money AND work better too.
