Question Snacks

Hi Eveyone

I've just posted an intro in that board.

I have just started the Atkins, but have been unable to find much info re. snacks. I know the books have recipes, but I'm at work all day - what lo-carb snacks can I buy?

Thanks

Johnny

Hi johnny. I've been wondering this also, and i have found a snack that's low in carbs and readily available.

It's Peperami, the green ones. Lovely spicy sausages! You can get them anywhere, each stick is only 0.4g of carb (i think). Check all the ingredents first though, there might be something else your not allowed in there (i doubt it, but then again i don't have the atkins book).

I'm interested as to whether mcdonalds cheesburgers (minus the bun) are low-carb. Anyone know?

Thanks Ironlung

I'm off to the supermarket at lunchtime to have a look at the ingredients!

Mmmmm!

Hi guys,

Try doing some hard boiled eggs. Pork Rinds are nice also. I don't get into much on snacks as I don't think of eating that much lately. Others will have more suggestions for you I'm sure

Default Cheese chips

I make cheese chips from cheese in the microwave....cut cheese into thin 1 1/2" size squares and put them on parchment paper in your mike... I cook my on med. for about 2 minutes....each oven will be different. Take them out, and let them cool....you can use a low carb dip with these as well....even my high carb friends like these. By the Havarti cheese is my favourite for this.

Default Mmmm.

Havarti my favourite! Also try that on a pappadum (1 minute) instead of the paper. You can eat the pappadum dipped in hummus. Low carb and mostly lentil flour.

Thanks sharon, i'm going to make some cheese chips tomorrow, they sound lovely! As long as the cheese is melted though. For some reason, i can only eat melted cheese. I almost puke if i eat solid cheese.

Oh by the way, what could i use instead of parchment paper? I don't think my mother ever buys that. Would tin-foil or baking paper do instead?

Default Snacks....

Nuts (watch the carbs; almonds or brazils are good, and just eat an ounce or two). Cheese ('cheese chips' or otherwise). Beef jerky; it's fairly expensive, but if you buy a dehydrator, you can make your own. Leftover slices of meat, chicken, etc. Deli meats. Pork scratchings (can't get them in Canada; and they're yum!). Celery stuffed with cream cheese or nut butter. Olives. A can of tuna or salmon, mix with mayo, eat with spoon or use to top celery or courgette slices. Smoked salmon.

my favorite snack is mini-pizzas. I take about 6 slices of salami (low carb) and I microwave them on a paper towel and plate for 3 minutes. They form little cup like hard chips. Once cool I put a few shreds of mozz cheese on them and microwave again for 30 seconds. Yum. Just like little pizza's.

Default Fast Food Places

Hi Johnny
I would go easy on the cheese slices at Mac Donalds as some sliced processed cheeses have about 4 carbs per slice. I would want to know what kind of cheese slices they are using. And be carefull of pepperoni as some of it has flour and sugar. all kinds of junk. At least that is what we get here in the Maritimes, Brothers pepperoni.
Good luck. Maybe try some sugarless gum and try to wean yourself off of snacks if possible. Good luck

One thing i'd love to know is if mcdonalds burgers are low-carb, or whether they use other ingredents in the process. They do put some sauce inside the bun onto the burger also, but i could scrape most of that off.

It's handy to know if i'm out and about and in need of a complimentary meal

I found a good site with nutritional information on many fast food chains - http://www.3fatchicks.com/fast/fast.html

Pity it's not low-carb specific, but still, it gives you all the carb counts. It would be nice to know how much much carbs are in everything once the buns etc are removed.

This sounds neat I am gonna go give it a try and use a little Oregano on top.
