Default September 30-Day Walking Challenge

Following on from August's 31-Day Walking Challenge, this is the challenge for September.

Quote:
Walking for Weight Loss, Physical Fitness and Mental Health

Walking can be a great way to lose weight if you have physical limitations that prevent you from doing other exercises.

You can still get in a great workout and burn extra calories throughout the week just by walking.

Although this might not be as many calories as running or jogging, these calories can add up by the end of the week and turn into pounds lost.

Just getting up and moving your body by taking a walk is a great place to start.

Have A Goal.

Setting a specific goal will also make sure that you stay accountable and get enough walking in to make a difference and help you lose weight.

Math Behind a Walking Challenge

An average person in the United States takes 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day (about 1.5 – 2 miles), and most walking challenges motivate participants to take at least 10,000 steps in a day. For context, most people burn an average of 30-40 calories per 1,000 steps, so 10,000 steps would equate to burning approximately 300-400 calories for the average person.

"The longest journey begins with a single step."

Set a monthly goal and post your steps daily.

You can use a Fitbit, for example, or a pedometer app on your mobile phone to track your daily steps or the distance of your workouts.

I've developed a formula for determining my goal. 10,000 steps for each work day, 4000 for each off day, and then round up to the nearest 25,000. So for this month, that will be 250,000.

Goal: 7,000-10,000/day
September goal: 250,000

Date * Steps * Remaining for goal
- 01 --- 6253 --- 243,747

Hello Demi, Kristine & Nichole! I'd like to join you here. I was a master at getting 10K+ steps in for much of the past 8 years. But after a knee injury in 2021 I've had trouble getting back into a regular routine. Recently I've made no attempt to work in daily walking. The knee is not and may never be 100% - but being sedentary will only make things worse. So, this challenge is exactly I need to get motivated again. Thanks Demi for keeping this going.

Goal: Average 10K steps per day each week - 300,000 for September
To keep things simple I'll round to the nearest 500

Date....... Steps ....... Remaining for goal
01...........7,000..........293,000

Welcome, Ken! Wishing you luck dealing with the knee pain. My sweet li'l stepmum has a hard time with her knees, and her docs told her the same thing - it's good to keep it moving.

Goal: 7,000-10,000/day
September goal: 250,000

Date * Steps * Remaining for goal
- 01 --- 6253 --- 243,747
- 02 --- 1360* -- 242,387

*That is way wrong. I was well over 1,000 early in the morning, and hubby and I were out shopping all afternoon. BAH. My Garmin watch is dying. It still caught my sleep correctly, and it's working so far this morning, but I wonder if the gyro (or whatever you call the mechanism that tracks movement) just jammed temporarily. The graph of my steps stops abruptly at around noon.

It IS at least 4 years old and has taken a beating. Maybe Santa will bring me a new one.

Welcome Ken!

Kristine are you going to get the same tracker you had or try something different?

Kristine - my older Garmin devices would do what you described, but not very often. I started with a vivofit, then Vivofit HR, then a Vivoactive. That data drop thing happened on all of them at least once. 2 years ago I bought a full sized Garmin sports watch - a Forerunner 935. MSRP was pricey, but I waited for Black Friday and got it for nearly half off. I've had no issues at all with this last Garmin. I know someone who has the Garmin Venu. He loves it. I love the look better than my current more expensive watch. I chose what I did because of battery life. The Venu needs charged every few days. The 935 will last up to 3 weeks before needing a charge.

Kristine, I've just replaced my Fitbit Charge 3 with the latest Charge 5. Got a really good deal, including free Premium membership for a year. So lots of whizzy data, if that's something you like.

Thanks for the tips, Ken and Demi. Mine's a VivoActive. Nichole, I wouldn't mind sticking with Garmin just because I'm already familiar with the software, but I'll compare companies and their models when the time comes. I wish I could wait until they start making them with a CGM. That'd be really cool!
