From a quick google search, I found this article discussing the different types of magnesium. Not sure if this will help, but it discusses different types.

I would like to see the scientific evidence to support the claims that site makes. Sounds more like sales hype that peer reviewed science to me. Magnesium oxide is the least absorbed form of magnesium and is less effective than Magnesium citrate if you want it's laxative properties.
If you want to increase your magnesium status then you need to look at sites that can back up what they say.

The problem with those two compounds is..they are cheap!! So it is assumed that they are poorly absorbed which is completely false.

Mag citrate is the most know magnesium for constipation. It draws water to the bowel thus helping with constipation.I have seen bottles of liquid mag citrate at those dollar stores and in pharmacies. You can chug one of those and you are good to go.

But, mag sulfate(epsom salts) is even better. It is the least absorbable magnesium..it will not be used by the body for much except it's laxative properties, so you get a concentrated dose for laxative purposes only.

To counteract this would it be advisable to drink more water ?

I've been reading various threads concerning the different kind os Magnesium and it just confuses me.

So, here goes:

My personal experience with magnesium supplements does not tally with what gostrydr says at all. I seemed to have no positive effect from taking Mg oxide tablets, the cramps and stiffness didn't go, regardless of how many of the dang things I took. All I got was loose stools.

I have tried various types of magnesium in the meantime and I also had the impression that Mg malate didn't do it for me either. The only ones I have really had any luck with are a product produced by Biocare which is a mix of Mg chloride and taurine and another one I get from iherb.com which is called Mg glycinate. With them I have finally found relief from the night cramps I used to get and also feel calmer, too.

I get the one kind from here:

The good thing about the Mg chloride is that you can take it before a meal: the chloride in it - apparently - gets split off and made into extra hydrochloric acid which helps you digest. Otherwise, magnesium shouldn't be taken with meals as it will act as an antacid and dilute your stomach acid which will mean you don't digest your food so well.

The way I try to remember to take my Mg is to have a Mg chloride before breakfast and a Mg taurate in the afternoon and before bed. I drink mineral water which has quite a bit of Mg in it, so I really don't need more than that, what with getting Mg in my food, too. I drink Apollinaris Medium - can you get that in France, too?

I hope this helps reduce your confusion a bit. It's maybe a case of YMMV (your mileage may vary) and you'll just have to try things out for yourself. Oh, and drinking alcohol and lots of coffee depletes Mg like nobody's business - which I am afraid to say I know from personal experience...

I have been taking mg+k supp for years just to reduce leg cramps and really never paid much attention as long as it was chelated.
it worked, that was the bottom line and yes, it was cheap.

but now my MVP is becoming more audible and my NP is sending me for some testing, (haven't seen a cariologist in about 4 years since i moved).

so i've been searching around....heartscanblog says malate or glycinate (i think).
i also wonder about mg water. mom is a laxative so i would've thought that it was not absorbed....but afibbers have obtained some positive results, so.....

it looks like CoQ10 and L-Carnitine are also recommended but when i've taken L-glutamine and L-Lysine they raised my liver enzymes.
i'll have to research the side effects of L-carnitine a bit more before i jump.

anyone else have success?

Isn't magnesium better then calcium for bone health, there was a study done on magnesium intake and bone health over 6 months think it was for arthritis. Bone grew 11% over that time.

So I'm assuming from what I've read that I could safely give my 10 yr old highly constipated son some magnesium on a regular basis to control this problem??

Hi Donna,

You could try it, in small amounts, but you could also consider that severe constipation is one of the possible side-effects of a gluten intolerance.

If you were to get him tested for gluten sensitivity, that might help you find out why he has this problem. Or does he not eat any veggies or fruit?

No actually he eats a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. He does love his sweets though. He would eat a pancake everyday for breakfast if I let him. He loves carbs!! But he does eat the veggies I serve every evening and at lunch when there are some left over. the gluten thing is a possibility. He has reactions to a lot of different things. Is the allergist the one to test for this or can it be his regular doc? Thanks for the information.
