Default low carb and pregnancy?

Hey all,

So my dh and I plan on getting pregnant again.. we have to go in for consult in July then hopefully have our FET cycle(frozen embryo transfer) in September or October.
So my question is, can you still low carb while pregnant? IF so do you go on the maintenance plan? I assume you would intake quite a bit more carbs then I'm eating now, under 20, right?
I REALLY don't want to end up gaining 60-70 lbs again like my last pregnancy... so would really love to keep with the way I am eating with some moderation's...
Any help appreciated!
Thanks!

Yes, Dr Atkins suggested a pregnant woman should eat from the maintenance options of foods - eating a small amount of whole grains and starchy vegetables etc and larger amounts of the lower rung foods.

So basically eating whole unprocessed foods and not using much in the way of bleached flours and grains and avoiding sugar

Hopefully by the time you do become pregnant you will have been able to increase your carb intake by climbing the OWL ladder and know which foods you can include and not gain weight or get cravings etc so you will have learned which foods you can eat without problems.

I am pregnant and lowcarbing with my midwifes blessing.....actually, she is a bit of a carb nazi so it is more of a mandate than a choice. I like the 20-40g range. But then ketosis doesn't concern me in the least. There has been a lot of discussion in the parenting and pregnancy forum here.

If I had it to do all over again, believe me, it would be low carb all the way. I regret not knowing about low carb the way that I do now, before my pregnancies.

I didnt know about low carb during my pregnancies (wish I wouldve, but still) just wanted to let you know it is possible to be pregnant and not gain extra weight. I wasnt overly careful with what I was eating (ok, when I wanted something, I had it, but made sure I wanted it first), stayed active, had two babies in 11 months (one 8.5 pounds, one 7.5 pounds) and ended up 27 pounds lighter than when I started! Weird. I gained between 40-60 with my first two and held onto a bunch of that. Strange, But possible!

I had wondered the same myself about LCing while pregnant. There seems to be quite a number of ladies here who have done so and had great pregnancies. I've been eating ZC for months, but now am not so worried about adding carbs into my day just for the sake of doing so while pregnant (although I have added a *little* more variety to my diet).

I am looking forward to continuing with my LC WOE and hopefully won't experience any gestational diabetes, high BP, etc..

I am TTC and am planning to eat modified low carb throughout my pregnancy. I plan to eat no more than 100-150 carbs a day. No refined sugar/flour.

Wishing you good luck as you begin to try!

I am still a couple of years away from trying, but.... I think about being pregnant (I have type I diabetes, so you begin planning a pregnancy years in advance...). I plan to increase my carbs and use the following to do so: more unsweetened yogurt, more low glycemic fruit, more beans, more cottage cheese, more starchy veggies like winter squashes...

I know these foods will help me through breastfeeding as well- breastfeeding causers a HUGE drop in blood sugar (for women with type I at least)....

again, good luck!

Robin - that is interesting. I didn't know that bfing causes a huge drop in blood sugar. Could you post more info about that? Would that be true in low-carbers too? Why would that happen? How does that effect the contents of the milk or the quantity?
