Question Gained almost 3lbs in 2 days....

My weight is usually fairly consistent. The only thing I can think of that changed was that I added sauerkraut to my diet. I feel VERY bloated, constipated, and legs feel huge. Could this all be from sauerkraut? I feel awful.

Your body is constantly adjusting how much water it has for lots of reasons. It's almost impossible to pin it down to one thing. Maybe it's the sodium, maybe is hormonal, maybe you are fighting an infection, maybe you are allergic to something in the sauerkraut, maybe Mars and Jupiter are in the wrong alignment.

I'm up four pounds in the last three days despite averaging a 2450 kcal/day deficit for over a week (so should have lost over 5 lb).

While it could, conceivably, be a sign of something significant, it is almost certainly just a transient fluctuation that will resolve itself in time. Hope you start feeling better soon.

Hang in there.

Give your gi a bit of time to adjust to the new food loaded with new microbes. Takes days to adjust to changes.

Was the sauerkraut "naturally fermented", ie not pasteurized, containing live bacterial cultures?? If you're new to consuming live-cultured vegetables, the recommendation is to go slow, just as Ms Arielle commented above. It can and will cause bloating if you go overboard . Try starting out with just a Tablespoonful per day and build up slowly from there.

I've been making/eating my own sauerkraut for a few years, even so I limit daily portion to about 1/4 cup.

I appreciate the replies and support so much. I dropped 2 of the pounds already just by eliminating the sauerkraut. Yes, it is naturally fermented. I agree, maybe too many microbes and sodium.
I ironically added the sauerkraut to help with the bloating and constipation I was having. I am still 2-3lbs above where I want to be; that said, I'm grateful to be down these 2lbs.
I've considered trying miralax, as nothing else I've tried works.

After years and years of constipation, bloating, and gas, I finally had to drop all plant foods. Once I did, my bloating went away and my digestion improved dramatically. But, everyone is different and we all tend to react to things differently. If you want to eat the sauerkraut, take it slow, as others have said.

Grrr... I'm back up another pound. This past month I've gained 3lbs. I've also started weight training and noticed more muscle definition. Do you think some of it could possibly be muscle weight? I feel like that's just wishful thinking.

Possibly some, but you'd probably need to be several weeks in and working pretty hard to account for 3 lb, especially at your weight.

I've gained 6 lb in three days despite averaging over 2200 kcal deficit a day. It's water. It will come off in due course as long as we stay the course. Don't let it get to you. It's fine to be annoyed or even frustrated, but don't let it drive behavior.

Can we start a club?? I gained 3 pounds in one day, since yesterday.

Our bodies are complex, it bounces and reacts.

Eating sauerkraut , the real versions, have great health benefits. Microbiome needs 2-3 weeks to adjust. Than is the time line for changing feeds for my horses and 🐑 sheep. So one day of a big change could be off putting.

Perhaps it means your gi needs help and support to be it's best. Like how to provide BOTH the probiotics AND prebiotics. After years of fortifying, my GI can tolerate WELL any quick changes. Took years of thoughtful intentional work to buy it make, then eat the right foods.
Very small amounts every other day to start is what worked for me.

Three pounds is really nothing to worry about. Weight naturally fluctuates so allowing our emotions to ride on the natural up and down fluctuation of our weight is only adding unnecessary worry and anxiety to our lives. That said it is possible to try to determine what might have caused the fluctuation, just do it without the unnecessary worry.

A gain of more than a pound sounds like something you ate didn't agree with you. Look at your menus for that day plus a day or two prior. Anything out of the ordinary? If so, stay away from it for a while. If you want to test it again after a while, you can, but watch symptoms like a hawk.

It's just fluid retention. No way you can gain 3 pounds of fat overnight.

I agree the number is not worth stressing over. That said, I'm still stressed over the discomfort from the bloating and constipation.
