Default Oat Bran Question

Hi. Dennis here -- I was looking at sources of fiber for constipation etc. I read a blog by Dr. Bernstein about how many oat bran concoctions raise blood sugar because they usually contains flour.

Swanson vitamins sell a version of oat bran supplement that contains: calicium sulfate, stearic acid, silica, and microcrystaline cellulose

The label sys <1 gram carbohydrate in a 850mg tablet.

Anyone know about this? do any of you take oat bran and does it have an effect on blood sugar?

I take magnesium citrate supplements as needed. They work without adding calories, chemicals or spiking blood sugars.

Don't know about the ingredients or effect on blood sugar, but I distinctly remember that I had to eat oat bran on the Dukan Diet ...and it was horrid. Like paste, no, not that good. are you getting enough salt? And water? If you still want a fiber, suggest you also look at Clear Organic Acacia Fiber. Not gritty, really is clear, no taste. It has been recommended by Brenda Watson for years, now that she has a new book out, there is a second brand of it called "Skinny Gut". The bottles look the same, both on Vitamin Shop website, the store only had the original ReNew Life brand. And she does not recommend psyllium at all. I'm taking acacia to add some extra fiber for gut health (per her book and as Fung's allowed fasting extra) but for constipation I also take magnesium.

Thanks all -- I read ,on the one site that you provided a while back Janet, that a diabetic should take magnesium malate (1200mg 2X daily). Although I might switch to magnesium citrate.(I've been taking 1000 mg magnesium malate daily). Although I have a history of stomache upsets with IBS so maybe it would be too much. Do you take Mag. citrate or malate Janet?

Also you'd think I'd get enough salt from bacon, pork rinds, and hamburger -- or do I need to supplement it?

I looked up Clear Organic Acacia Fiber -- might be something I'll get. It does have 4 G carbs per serving though.

Magnesium is the most confusing supplement, so many versions! The maleate is supposed to be the most absorbable, often recommended for health by Bowden, Eades and many others.
But I currently take an inexpensive Now mag cap that is a combo of three types, but mostly the cheaper oxide and citrate, which has more of the laxative effect. Dr. Westman suggests just taking smaller daily doses of Milk of Mag. Dr. Davis makes a "mineral water" mixing unflavored MoM into water.
The Eades have a whole chapter on magnesium in their Lifeplan book, but he summarized the tips on types and doses here in this article (with salt too!)

The ReNew acacia is 5 carbs and 5 fiber.

Sounds to me you do need more salt. (I use extra salty broth and salt my foods) Please read the Salt Thread:
