NSAIDs are bad, but I think Acetaminophen is even worse.

I stopped taking acetaminophen back in the 90s, and I'm lucky it wasn't too late. I was taking it by the bucket load when I was on my feet all day between school and work, and my back was killing me. I was also a party girl and I had no idea it caused any problems when combined with alcohol, even though I never took them together.

I watched a talk show with a guest trying to raise awareness about the issue. He was taking cold meds and was a glass-of-wine-a-day drinker, and he ended up with a liver transplant. I think he sued the drug company because they knew (or should have known) that the risk is more serious than what's on the label.

I don't even want acetaminophen in my house. I think it's scary. So annoying that all the heavy duty pains meds prescribed (when I broke my wrist two months ago, and then had surgery) all include acetaminophen which meant i didn't want to take them!

So what does one do for heavy duty pain? Ibuprofen has generally worked for me, but only if I take 3-4 at a clip. Taking 2 or fewer doesn't even take the edge off the pain. Yet my current bottle of ibuprofen says the dose is *1* tablet, with no more than 6 per day. Why bother with 1 tablet since that dose is utterly useless?

In the meantime I'm just crabby because of pain all the time - but definitely don't want any acetaminophen so the prescription Percocet just sits on my shelf.

acetaminophen has never worked well for me, I am allergic to narcotics, so no matter what I get NSAIDS. Prescription pain NSAIDS are much higher doses, Motrin I have has in 600-800mg tablets and took 1-2. too bad I just saw on another thread that they stall weight loss because with 2 surgeries in the last 10 months I live on them.

What about naproxen (Aleve)? Advil doesn't seem to work for me, and now about five hours after taking it one Aleve, have some relief of knee pain and inflammation. Other than the odd heart attack and also don't drink (too late) this seems to work.

Aleve is what messed up my gut so badly. But it did a great job a reducing my pain.
