Cattle over almonds .....and pistachios!!!
A recent npr news bit duscussed in detail the exorbidant amounts of well water to grow pistachios.

In one area the water table is dropping 10 feet a month. The wells for local families are dry, and the farmer is spending something like $10m to drill deeper wells. Nuts / farmers over people. At $10/#, the most revenue is in pistachios over other nuts.

Its just NUTS.

It's one of the reasons I've cut out almonds for now, and things like almond MILK! A total blight on the ecosystem. My new favorite are Barukas nuts when come from the Amazon basin and harvested from the wild:
Quote:
The trees that give these nuts are called Baruzeiro. They are found in the Cerrado, which covers an area 3 times the size of Texas. It’s the most biodiverse savanna on the planet. Unfortunately, it is under severe threat, with millions of Baruziero trees being burned down to make way for soy production and unsustainable agriculture.

The growth of Barůkas nuts can not only help put an end to the deforestation but also reverse it. And it allows indigenous people to make a living off the land.

Default Sacred Cow Documentary

Got a chance to view the documentary version of the book this morning and am very impressed with the treatment and content of this topic. The theme is how to develop sustainable farming to benefit all. I highly recommend this movie and encourage people to watch it and share it when it's available.

Monday was World Alzheimer’s Day. Dr Ben Bikman had a five minute video introduction to how it is a metabolic disease. https://www.facebook.com/BenjaminBi...79581662365896/

Back to books, I’m only a third of the way through, but this new book is excellent for anyone with an interest in the diet and cancer connection.

Leonardo's Legacy, the Science and Philosophy of Diet and Cancer through the Ages By Dr Colin Champ, now at Duke Cancer Center.

https://www.amazon.com/Leonardos-Le...k/dp/B08HL83LYC

Quote:
Serious inconsistencies and scientific gaps plague current dietary recommendations, especially when it comes to cancer. Moreover, these recommendations crash head on with many traditional, ethnic, and cultural practices around the world. Until we openly address what led to these recommendations, the overwhelming impact of philosophical and religious beliefs over science, and the fatal inconsistencies that lie within, we will be unable to have a candid conversation about what we should eat to fight cancer. Did Leonardo, a poor shepherd from southern Italy, know this all along?

Leonardo’s Legacy is a first attempt to start this conversation.

“Dr. Champ’s book weaves together a fascinating family history with the shifting science of how diet and cancer are related. Add a foray into the roots of dietary ideologies buried in the teachings of Plato and you have a provocative meditation on why we believe the – sometimes foolish – things we do about food and health. It is a book that should appeal to clinicians, researchers, and anyone interested in eating wisely.”

Adele Hite, PhD, MPH, RDN

I ordered the print paperback, but if you have Kindle Unlimited it is free for now.

As always, I highly recommend registering for his newsletter on a myriad of topics; how I learned the book had finally been published.
Blog posts on his website are samples of his philosophy to lifestyle and cancer risk.

Dr Zoe Harcombe's tweet about Cancer Code:
"I'm reading an advance copy at the moment and it's
~drjasonfung 's best yet. Really really interesting and his usual highly readable style."

As much as I like Dr Champ and enjoy reading his blog, not many would call his new book highly readable.

Ladyhawk, what good news, every day and year is precious.
