Into a higher gear. A new record by six seconds, LOL.

2 flights of stairs x 50 trips up and down
Time: 25:40
Heart Rate: 170. 170 is high, but you kinda have to expect it when pushing a record time.

It fell apart in the second half. If I'd been able to maintain the pace of the first half, the time would have been 24:40. No point in pushing to the point of having to stop and gasp for breath though, that makes for an even worse time.

Lower gear.

2 flights of stairs x 50 trips up and down
Time: 28:10
Heart Rate: 164

Just wasn't feeling it. Lack of carbs? I dunno.

One of my co-workers brought a vintage Schwinn Airdyne to work, so instead of doing stairs, I used it. It wasn't a comfortable thing to do, because the saddle tilt had me sliding forward, and I had to stop and adjust the height a couple of times. Nevertheless it was a legit workout!

15 minutes, average cadence ~58 RPM
avg heart rate 155 BPM

Stairs. It's been a while and it shows! Toward the end I was feeling a bit ill, so no point continuing... I'll get back to it.

2 flights of stairs x 32 trips up and down - not the full 50
18:05 and 162 BPM avg.

Slowed down and went to 5 miles 36:30.

It's a good week. Under 200 lb (91 kg for our friends with more rational units) for the second day, so I'm making it official.
199.4 lbs today. Exercise later hopefully. It's work, so you never know

Did stairs tonight, and it felt pretty rough, right from the start. I'm pretty certain the icky feeling and poor performance are due to the reduced calories that comes with intermittent fasting.

Anyhow it felt really bad, so I cut it short.

30 sets of 2 flights
16:45 and 157 BPM avg heart rate.

Heh, it's been a while. Jan 28 was the last post. I haven't been exercising this past week, and that feels rough. But I have been moving towards getting back into an old hobby - bicycle riding.

I'm no longer the athletic gear-pounding stud (ha!) that I once was, but I've decided to get back in the saddle again. It's taking a bit of time and money to get the old steed safe to use though.

Furthermore, things have changed since I last rode on the shoulder of a busy street - like texting. I have no problem dying while doing something I love, but getting mowed down by an inattentive driver seems... so pointless and awful. For that reason, I will only be road-biking on dedicated bike paths.

However, there are only a couple of those nearby, and I'm certain to get bored to death riding on them day after day. So yesterday I picked up a mountain bike - and today it's windy and snowing hard LOL. Anyway, the idea is to get some exercise, go some places where you don't normally, and pick up a few new riding skills - like navigating rocks, ruts and roots without falling over.

Hopefully the inevitable crashes lead to bruises and not breaks Updates to follow

OK, so yesterday I went on my first trip (since elementary school) off the asphalt on two wheels.

It was a bit more adventure than I anticipated. I found myself in the center of a frozen dirt road with deep tire ruts on either side of me. The center where I was riding was frozen, slick, and covered with snow.

To either side of the slick hump I was riding on were deep tire ruts. The ruts contained broken ice shards and muddy water from previous car traffic. Not something you want to slide off and fall into. That would have been chilly to slide off and put a foot into - let alone fall over into. It certainly tested my long-dormant bike handling and balance skills - on an unfamiliar bike.

There was one short and steep climb, where I was in the bottom gear going at walking speed. I found myself wondering how you could go so slow and still still be riding. I left a wobbly tire track, and thought my heart was going to explode, but eventually made it up.

After getting past that, the ride wasn't technical. I got onto an old (unpaved) railroad grade - which was also frozen solid. The frozen ground pounded my butt where the railroad ties had been pulled up - there's a dip every foot or so where the railroad ties once were.

I loved every moment. Will be doing this again today.

Another ride on the same four-mile route - plus three more miles. It went a lot easier today.

I had intended to ride into Farragut State Park, but I reached a part of the trail where there were so many downed pine trees that it was impossible to get through all the branches. So I turned around and went home. I'll try a different trail tomorrow.

Bike ride. 22 degrees F. 5 miles.

Cut it short as my butt is really sore from the shocks of riding across uneven frozen trails on a hardtail bike. I'm learning about mud in the shift mechanism. It can get up in there and freeze into a block that prevents you from shifting. Nasty when you have a big uphill and can't drop into a lower gear.

30 minutes, 147 BPM.

Plus a quick elliptical workout
15 min resistance 2, avg heart rate 155

You have no idea... It was pretty brutal. I made a blog post about it.

Tonight, stairs!
30 trips up and down the two flights.
Time 17:02, Heart rate 157 Avg.

I recently installed the Strava app on my phone. I tried to record the stair session, using the "hiking" setting. I pressed the record button, and afterwards when I stopped the recording session, it showed zero exercise time, zero miles, and zero elevation gain.

Then it asked me if I wanted to save the recorded session. LOL no.
