No, you don't cook the sausage first. There's not that much in there and it gets nice and brown. If you put too much sausage, the egg won't fit. I had the very large muffin cups and the egg was all the way to the top, using a large egg. My egg was all the way done, but very tasty. You are cooking it for 20 to 25 minutes in an oven that is 400 degrees.
