Ok, please forgive me for my dumb American butt in advance. Several years ago, my ex-penpal in Japan sent me a recipe book written in Japanese. Well, I finally found somebody to translate it to English, and tried one of the sauce recipes out, and it came out totally messed up! My question is, are Japanese measuring cups smaller than the US measuring cups? I know it sounds stupid, but I have a feeling that it is smaller, and I'm just wondering if anybody knows for sure. Also, some recipes says c.c. as in 100 cc of cream. How do I convert that to cups or fl oz?

I don't think it deals with the sie of the measuring cup but it does have CL and probalby CC on it

A c.c. (cubic centimetre) is more commonly known as a mL (millilitre) on North American cooking implements.

So 100 cc = 100 mL, which is more than 1/3 of a cup, and less than 1/2 a cup.

You'd be well served by finding metric measuring cups/spoons.

Thank you KoKo and gaijingal! It makes it easier to know that cc = ml because I have the ml on the other side of my measuring cup! I still would like to know if 1 cup by Japanese measuring cup is less than US 1 cup. I guess I could ask somebody at a Japanese restaurant when I go out to the city one of these days lol. The Japanese don't tend to use a "one-cup measure" in the way we do, as it is really a rather antiquated and unwieldy system. However, that said, when they do, yes, it tends to be 200 mL, rather than the Western 250 mL.

I don't know where you're at, but if you're outside Japan, they people running the restaurant probably aren't Japanese (probably Vietnamese or Chinese).

If you're in Japan, if they can stop giggling about your "weird" question, they probably won't know the answer. If they don't know the answer, they WILL make something up.

Never ask the Japanese anything about gaikoku vs. Japan.

I know this is highly politically incorrect and I just don't care.

I had a feeling that it was smaller, but I just wasn't sure if I messed up my measuring or what! Thank you! I think I'll be doing a little translating of my own on that book lol.

I live in southern US, and you're right, most of the people working at the Japanese restaurant that we usually go to are Laotian or Chinese. Even the two Sushi chefs are Korean lol. I really appreciate you helping me out!
