Default cholesterol results: are they good?

Hi there!

just back from the doctor and asked for a break down on my recent cholesterol test.

HDL-1.4-------54.13766mg/dl
LDL-4.6------177.8809mg/dl
TRI-1.1-------97.43136mg/dl

I used an online converter but don't have a clue as to whether my numbers are good, so any feedback is welcome

Your HDL is fairly good, but with longer eating on Atkins it should go up (it is helped by good fat and protein, and low carbs….without sugar etc.)

Your LDL is considered high, BUT…..it would actually help to know which type they are….fluffy or dense. You have to request more than the standard cholesterol test to find that out, and it's a bit more expensive.

Your Tri's are under 100, which is good, but they could be a bit lower. Tri's are somewhat transient and vary all the time depending on what you have been eating.
____

I myself have always tended towards somewhat high cholesterol…on my last test my HDL was 85, my LDL was 225 but it was the light fluffy type, and my trio's were 75. My overall total was high because that number is a composite of the other 3, but my doctor says she isn't worried.

Thankyou for your quick response!
I had a gallbladder stones attack and that prompted the blood tests. Didn't know about the big fluffy particles until after it was done and came on this site looking for info.
Doc says she isn't concerned at the moment and will test me again in a year.
Would definitely have to pay to find out if I have large particle or small dense ones.
Will enquire about the cost of that when I see my doctor next month.

Your cholesterol is good in general, and continuing to eat low carb could improve your gallstones too.

January through March were rough months due to losing my 16 year old cat so I went offplan big time. Definitely a comfort eater.
So it came as a surprise to have a gallbladder attack when I wasn't eating atkins style as I know it gets attacked for the high fat tag.
When I am on track and eating well, I lose weight relatively easy, considering I can't exercise, due to chronic fatigue/fibro.
Basically got told today by the doctor to eat what I thought was benefitting me healthwise, which for me is Atkins woe and not beat myself up too much for falling off the wagon. Back on it now.

HDL 1.1
LDL 2.23
TRIGLYCERIDESS 0.1

I just found my last (the only time I've had them checked) cholesterol results from way back in December 2003 a bout 7 months after I started Atkins - they're in English and I always remember my doctor phoning me up as he was concerned that my triglycerides were too low and that could be a marker for cancer, so we needed to try to get them up!!!!

Since then I've had no time for the whole cholesterol nonsense - no proof!

Carole, mmol/L measurement is used in most countries in the world, inc. Europe and Canada, except the U.S., as we cling to a mg/dL BG measurement along with our miles and feet Here is a converter, http://www.diabetes.co.uk/blood-sugar-converter.html.
With explanation of the difference. But all those numbers are exceedingly low, possibly a lab error?

Thanks again for all your replies.
Yeah, I am not going to get bogged down by the numbers, just going to keep on track and continue eating well!

When I called to get my results, the receptionist told me that my cholesterol was of a concern because it was high.
When I saw the doctor to discuss the results, she said she wasn't concerned at all. Thats the last time I listen to the receptionist!
I got myself all worked up as a result and had made up my mind that I wasn't taking a statin lol!

It's been over a decade since I got my cholesterol checked. Many years back I was on Lipitor which caused severe disabling joint pain so I vowed never to take a statin again. Since then I discovered low carb eating and all the critiques of cholesterol as a marker for anything and for statins as dangerous drugs. Since I am happy with the way I eat, and I refuse to ever take a statin, I can't see any reason for getting my cholesterol checked. I tell my doctor that since I won't change anything I do based on the results there is no reason to get tested. I'm not sure she agrees but she has stopped mentioning it to me.

I am of the same mind regarding statins. Having lived with cfs/fibromyalgia for going on 8 years, I am not going to take something that could cause muscle pain to get worse.
I think since I changed over to eating atkins my general health has improved. Still to have an impact on cfs/fibro but I live in hope!

Right, that would be a bad combo. Have you tried a Paleo Autoimmune Diet for the Fibro? Know you just got back to Atkins LC diet, and Paleo is stricter in quality of foods, but I have read so many success stories about the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) you might want to consider a fair trial on it. There are so many books and websites about AIP, but here is a good summary: http://www.thepaleomom.com/autoimmu...immune-protocol

The possible mechanism why AIP works for Fibro was explained by Chris Kresser in my recent post in the Fibro/cfs Forum. http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=47

Wishing you good health,

Is there a range, or are the numbers given the top of the range? They kind of look like billing codes?
