I admit it I like Turnips but I only had them mashed with potatoes.
I have see hints that there are ways of preparing them.
Question: Can you substitute turnips for any potatoe recipe?
In other words: Can you make hash browns, fries, pancakes with these things??
I made the mashed turnips and the texture was "grainy" like. I don't own a blender or a food processor... Should I cook the turnips till they fall apart next time? I did like the flavor.
I'm sure everyone has different tastes for their food textures.
Personnally, I just cut the turnip into small pieces (1") and boil gently (like boiled potatoes). When cooked I add a little butter and some brown sugar twin...and then mash. I'm sure you could use a blender or a hand food processor and that would make it have a smoother texture. Perhaps it's an acquired texture taste?? I guess I don't know any difference as this is the way I've eaten them for years.

Turnips!!! Never thought I would be eating a bowl of them and calling then faux mashed potatos! Here is what I do--and they are a little grainy. I boil them really well and then mash and whip with an electric beater adding real butter and salt and pepper and mayonaise. The mayo is important as it seems to make them fluffy--I also use the mayo trick in scrambled eggs (another topic). Then when well whipped, I add shredded parmesan or the shredded cheese called Italian Blend that's already packaged. Hope this helps. ~~bella
I never had turnips before I saw the recipe on the Atkinscenter for spicy turnip fries. They are a staple in my house now. We eat them at least once a week! We put Emeril Lagasse's essence on em with fresh ground pepper. YUM! Curry powder was even tasty on em. I like to cook them a little longer so they get crispy. The best though was having the fries with Keto Ketchup. Even ppl at work who don't low carb tried em and loved them.
By turnips do you mean the small purple and white things, or do you mean the enormous pale peachy coloured rocks that we call swede in Britain? I have been avoiding them both as too starchy.
I feel ready for a bit of adventure in vegetable land, so was v. interested in this thread.

fried turnips
I love to eat turnips as an alternative for fried potatoes. I slice them up like fried potatoes, and cook them on the stove in butter in olive oil, until they are soft enough. It really enhances their flavor to add some chopped up green onions, and a little seasoning.
YUM!
