Default I get dry mouth at night after eating carbs

Hiya,

I have been lo carbing for over 3 years. In the beginning, I used to suffer from a dry mouth every night. Now, however, I only get it when I have been 'bad' in the evening, eg. had a glass of red wine or some 70% chocolate or a bit of ice cream.

I normally have between 20-40 grams of 'good carbs' per day and have no trouble at night.

I have read many of the threads on dry mouth and seen alot of people complaining about it, but so far no good reason on why it happens.

I suppose I am still worried that it could be a diabetic reaction, though my tests are normal.

BTW, I am not prepared to forgo my weekly treats (I'm SO GOOD most of the time) and realise this may be something I've got to live with.....

Cheers for any replies!

Hmm. I get dry mouth but not after eating carbs.

Could be you are expelling too much water. Adding 1 tsp sea salt to every quart you drink may help.

Default 2 questions...

....are you drinking enough water and what does your blood sugar look like?
A dry mouth for me is a sign that my blood sugar is elevated and since you report that particular symptom after "being bad", you might want to have it checked out by your doctor or borrow a blood sugar meeter (glucometer) from a friend and check it yourself. You can have normal fasting blood sugar readings but still have high readings after eating sugar or other sources of refined carbs.
If you do decide to check with a meeter, you would eat something that produces the symptoms and then check at 30 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours after eating it to see what the readings are. Normal would be no higher than 140-150 at any point and below 120 at the 2 hour mark. If those are normal, then it's probably something else causing the symptoms. If they're not, you might want to make another trip to your doctor to have them follow up on it.

Thanks for all of the advice....

I'm tempted to get on my soapbox here about the health service in the UK...I am a yank chick but have been living here for about 10 years....and whilst there are good things about the National Health Service, i.e. it's free for everybody, the concept of preventative medecine or even investigations of conditions that aren't deemed to be serious is non-existent.

I have had my blood normal fasting blood sugar tested, and it was indeed within normal ranges - but even for this you need to go to the hospital - doctors here just simply do not have the tools to do anything other than a normal exam....

OK soapbox rant off!

I do drink enough water, probably 2 litres a day, so I don't think that's it.

I have been living with this for a few years now, and whilst it's uncomfortable it's OK - I mean in the morning I am fine - but is it dangerous - is this a sign that something is seriously wrong, or have I just re-trained my body to such an extent that it can't deal with sugar? As many of you probably know it's just so frustrating trying to explain to a doctor that just doesn't have the knowledge or the time to help. Sigh.

Thanks
