Default Will taking Vit. D keep u up at night?

Does anyone know if taking vitamin D at night would disrupt sleep? I took some late last night and didn't sleep well.

It can happen. You are better off taking it in the morning.

Because Vitamin D is fat soluble and has a half life of around 3-4 weeks it really doesn't make a great deal of difference if you take your D3 daily, weekly or even monthly. So if you feel that taking it late at night causes problems (this is not the case generally) and you sometime forget to take it in the morning, you may find it better to take all 7 days worth say on the same morning each week.
It would be perfectly safe, if you intend to take say 3000iu/daily to take 4 x 5000iu +20,000iu once each week averaging just under the 3000iu/d
To average 2000iu/daily it would be fine to take 3 x 5000iu=15000iu/week=2000iu+ once weekly.
The only exception to this would be if you were breast feeding in which case it is necessary to take your D3 DAILY to ensure your breast milk is always vitamin d replete see this paper from Hollis to see the amount needed.

It's also the case that D3 is best absorbed with food. I have a feeling that taking D3 with omega 3 enables them to work together synergistically. If you've taken your magnesium the night before then this also will work with the D3/Omega3 combo.

If you are having sleep problems may I suggest you take MAGNESIUM before you go to bed. 600mg/d of magnesium malate or taurinate should solve the problem. You may need to work up to this amount starting from about 300mg/d for a week then 400mg/daily for 7 days then 500mg etc.

Thanks. You are one smart dude. I do take magnesium at night, but last night I took the D at the same time. Also, I take 1200 mg mag. OXIDE - what's the difference grasshopper.

The oxide form, despite having the highest amount of magnesium in it unfortunately is one of the worst for absorption so it's generally the least recommended by those who understand magnesium supplementation.
Mrs Doubtfire on Neurotalk has lots of good common sense to say about magnesium in this thread but I'm sure there are other threads of hers if you search.
Krispin also knows a lot about Magnesium very keen on Albion chelates.

Default Not my problem

This time of year, I'm increasing my dose to 6000 IU per day, taken in three doses. Can't say that the last dose, with dinner, does anything to my sleep, given everything else I take.

I know in the mega-vit d3 thread that some people said it disrupted their sleep. Maybe when you're very low on D3 it does?

I'd take it in the morning to be safe.

Not sure if its just me, but I did notice I wasnt sleeping very well when I took my D3 with my evening meal. I currently try and take it with breakfast (I am at 10,000 IU per day normally even during the summer since I rarely even get much sun at all).

I've suggested vitamin D to loads and loads of people. I always...well almost always...tell them not to take vitamin D after 4 pm or no sooner than 4 hours before bedtime because it can disrupt sleep.

Thanks. I've been taking it with fish oil and food at different times. Just happens to not usually be at night.

Now I wonder how much I should take. I don't want to do a test right now. Maybe next time I go to the doc, I'll add that on sort of. I'm 5'8", 155 lbs., and as whitey white girl (blond hair, blue eyes-almost ghost-like in the winter if I don't tan) white as it gets-if that matters because I read something about melatonin being involved. I tan once a week or less sometimes, basically for maintanance (to avoid the ghost) in a uvb only bed for 10 minutes. Usually in the fall, I spend almost all my time indoors, so assume the sun I get is not very significant. Can I get a guestimate or is everyone so different there's no way to find out without the test?

Guesstimate, 8-10k/day for three months and then 5k/day.
