I feel much better now that I am eating as a carnivore than when I was eating as a vegetarian. I no longer have any of the diseases of civilization that I used to have.

Fascinating article. I, too, feel better when I eat a higher ratio of animal protein.

There is much evidence that humans were primarily meat eaters, and in more recent times became more grain eaters. Dr. Edes wrote about the native people's in SE of the US.

Most groups still eat some vegetation and are not strictly carnivore.

(Another factor: as we age, acidity in stomach starts to decrease, which necessitates more protein to meet our needs. Adding an acid during a meal like acv CC an help.)

Definitely, meat protein in the human diet is under rated. And we are not meant to be vegan nor vegetarian. (Dr Mary edes)

I have the teeth of an omnivore.

I have the digestive enzymes of an omnivore.

I have the alimentary canal of an omnivore

I have the dietary needs of an omnivore

Therefore I eat an omnivorous diet, and that incudes animal protein.

I'm 76, in great health, on zero prescriptions and I've been playing music professionally since the late 1960s and I've never-ever called in sick - never missed a gig.

Omnivore works for me. YMMV.

Bob

When I was a child there was no question that meat was what fueled our larger brains. Which made us hunt more. Which made our brains grow in complexity.

I think there is definitely a racial component to how well we digest plants vs. animals, carbs vs. protein sources. Many people in the past had to subsist on a mainly animal protein diet through the ice age, some people groups did not, but perhaps lived in deserts where dairy and animal meat, tubers and nuts were much more important than cereals. In terms of time, the intensive cultivation of cereals is relatively recent. Archaeological studies show conclusively that health deteriorated in people groups once they went to a mainly cereal diet, but people traded, as they do now, a high quality diet for consistency and ease, and there is some thinking that it was also tied to a hierarchical society where many people laboured and ate a subsistence diet mainly on grains to support an elite upper class. Most people in history had no choice. They had to eat bread, lentils and porridge morning, noon, and night, but we have better choices.

I've read opinions that human brains started to enlarge when we started to eat cooked meat.

Of course there is no way to prove that, but it's an interesting hypothesis.

One thing I know for sure, meat eaters in the animal kingdom are smarter than herbivores.

I've never heard anyone compliment another by saying "He's as as smart as a cow", or "as smart as a sheep."

Just an observation, not a double-blind scientific experiment.

Excellent points, Sandy and Bob! Once we got clever enough to create convenience, we got hooked on it.

I get "brain fog" and want to nap after eating grains & legumes, which wouldn't work well against predators
