Heck no! Have you been lifting for a while now or is this the 'first workout' as well as the first one in the new home gym?

Hi Nat!

I've been working with dumb bells (light ones) for a while now and I also worked out at "Curves" for 3 months this summer. I just haven't been consistent with working out since September. I remember the trainer at Curves commenting that I had really good upper body strength for a woman when I first started, but I didn't think much of it since it's impossible to tell how much resistance you're getting on those machines; you just push it as hard as you can.
Come to think of it, I used to be able to toss around bags of grain and bales of hay when I was growing up and helped out at the local stable where my horse was kept and I did a lot of heavy lifting at the nursing home where I worked when I was in college. Maybe I haven't lost as much as I thought?

I'd have to agree. Those are some pretty heavy numbers for a female to be lifting - and news flash, those tension machines are usually harder than free weights - the constant tension means you're working on both the positive and negative.

I can't imagine bales of hay are feather light either

Thanks, Nat!

It's a single stack weight system and I'm not really sure how accurate those numbers are. It would be interesting to test it with free weights to see if I can lift the same amounts. I'm going by the chart in the manual for how many pounds of resistance you get with a certain number of stacks. I know that my 20 lb. dumb bell set was getting way too light for me, though, and will probably be getting a 40 lb. set in the next week that can have additional weights added to it later.
If I remember correctly, a bale of hay weighs in the range of 60-70 pounds and the bags of grain were about the same.
DH was pushing for a barbell set with a weight bench, but I find barbells akward to work with.

or maybe they aren just too light

The fascination we have with numbers and 'how much' is pretty incredible. I still have this secret desire to test out one of those leg press machines where you have to load on the weights just to see what I can do.

I'd hazard that if you loaded up a barbell with free weights you'd be pressing a little more than those 70lbs on the machine.

Cheers!
Nat

Hi Lisa, I've been being nosey looking in everyone's gym logs, seeing what they do for routines...you're not a wussy!! I think that's pretty darned good! I think free weights are harder than machines anyways. I love those leg press machines at the gym, it's the only thing I miss. And I admit to being obsessed with what I can lift too Nat. Keep it up Lisa!

Musles are only mildly sore today, so I'll probably add another set of each exercise tomorrow. I think I may have done something wrong with the leg lifts, though, because my right hip abductor muscle really hurts like I pulled it. Ouch! Better rest it for an extra couple of days and recheck my technique the next time I do those.

DarkLotus...

I miss the leg press machine at Curves, too...I really was getting some good results in my calves and thighs with that. I don't miss that sadistic squat machine, though.

Hello!

Just lurking in some Gym Logs. You are far from wuss-ville and you leave me feeling a little like a wuss at the moment. It's all relative. I know I'm working hard at the time.

Just curious, what kind of home gym did you invest in?

Today's workout:

Bench Presses: 8 reps at 100#, 12 reps at 70#
Butterflies: 2 sets of 12 at 22#
Triceps extensions: 2 sets of 12 at 44#
Triceps pushdowns: 2 sets of 12 at 44#
Lat pulldowns: 2 sets of 12 at 60# (lower weight was too easy)
Preacher curls: 2 sets of 12 at 50#
Quad lifts: 1 set at 50# (still taking it easy on the pulled muscle)
10 bent leg situps, arms at sides (yeah..I have no ab strength at all!)

Better workout today...I'm feeling it more already, especially in my arms.
DH is picking up that 40# dumb bell set this afternoon, so I'll probably do some dumb bell flys when he gets home.
Think I'll add some seated rows next workout.

Today's workout:

2 sets bench presses at 4 stacks
2 sets lat pulldowns at 4 stacks
1 set butterfly at 2 stacks
1 set quad lifts at 4 stacks
2 sets preacher curls at 12.5 lbs. each arm
2 sets triceps extensions 1 at 2 stacks, 1 at 3 stacks
1 set behind the head triceps extenstions with 12.5 pounds
10 sit ups (getting easier)
20 bent knee leg lifts
3 sets (12 each leg) inner thigh leg lifts

Increased weight resistance by 1 stack on bench presses, lat pulldowns and butterfly. Will probably keep it there for at least the next 3-4 weeks as those last couple of reps were really hard to do with good form.
Picked up and read "8 Minutes in the Morning" by Jorge Cruise and will be incorporating some of those exercises on the days that I'm not lifting.

Girlfriend, you work! Always great to see women getting into lifting.

Two questions for you:
1. Are you considering moving toward more free-weights
and
2. Do you get anything out of those inner-thigh leg lifts? I tried them a bunch of times, but I never seemed to get anything out of them. Ditto the adductor/abductor machine. I always wondered if I was doing them wrong.

And you are making SUPER progress! You must feel SOOOOOO GOOD!
